First quality image of the James Webb

Souce

The first quality photo of the James Webb Space Telescope has been presented, all astronomy fans will remember this historic day because this telescope is going to revolutionize everything.

This telescope has had a lot of problems, it has had a lot of delays, even its name has been questioned, but in the end the James web was launched on December 25, 2021 aboard an Arian 5 rocket.

It was launched from the base of the European space agency in French Guiana because this is a project that not only belongs to NASA, NASA is leading it, but in addition to the United States, the European space agency and the Canadian space agency participate.

The objective was to have a more powerful telescope that can replace and surpass the Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes, the James Webb promises to offer unprecedented resolution and sensitivity and will allow us in theory and as we are beginning to see in practice extend a range impressive research in the fields of astronomy and cosmology, in a mission that will last between 5 to 10 years.

The James Webb needs a lot of cold to be able to work, its instruments must be at minus 220 degrees Celsius, during all these months the James Webb and the team of experts who operate it have been first deploying the telescope and then testing the operation of the equipment , lately we have seen some images that the James webb has taken, but until now they were only calibration photos, photos and images to check the status of the optics systems, but today, Monday, July 11, the big day has arrived.

The president of the United States has presented, together with the director of NASA and other members of high positions and officials, the first image taken in high resolution with quality and in color of the James webb, the presentation that was made at the white house.

The image presents the cluster of galaxies SMACS 0723 is a large image full of details, where you can see very bright stars with 6 flashes, but all the rest are galaxies and some you look closely are distorted by the effect of gravitational lenses, that is, a large mass, it can be clusters of galaxies or it can be dark matter, a large mass that gravitationally acts on light like a lens distorting the light and that is why we see them in that elongated shape.

It is a predictable image, I did not personally expect another one, in it there are thousands of galaxies and this portion where there are thousands of galaxies actually covers a piece of the sky from the earth of approximately the size of a grain of sand held on the outstretched arm, imagine everything else in the universe that can be observed by this incredible eye that we have in space.

And this is the first, but tomorrow there will be more images, there are five packages of initial images that we are going to see tomorrow, in fact, July 12 will be the official date on which the telescope will begin its scientific activity.

Tomorrow we should see, for example, an image of the Karina nebula, it is one of the largest and brightest nebulae in the sky, it is located approximately 7,600 light years away in the southern constellation of Karina, the nebulae are very interesting because they are nurseries of stars and it is where stars form and this particular Karina nebula is home to many stars some larger than the sun.

Also tomorrow they will show the exoplanet wash96b, it is a giant planet, it is located almost 1,150 light years away from Earth, it orbits its star every 3.4 days, it has about half the mass of Jupiter and its discovery was announced in 2014.

This telescope is going to be very important for the search for exo planets because not only will it be able to capture them with greater precision, but it will also be able to capture their atmospheres with greater precision and that is a substantial and very important advance because if we can characterize the atmospheres knowing what gases make up the atmosphere of a planet we can discover if, for example, there is water and the possibility of life on that planet.

It seems strange that the bright stars have 8 rays. I always associated the rays with imperfections in the lens.

I also got that doubt, who knows what they are showing us!!

You have to question everything, it's the beginning of science!

Cheers

I think all science fans are discussing about it! Thanks for bringing some curiosities!

I don't like astrology either, that's not science, astronomy is science.
