Discover a Geological passage to Jules Verne

In Panama there are more than 13 inactive volcanic complexes, they are beautiful places that are the end or the beginning depending on how you look at it, of the impressive arc of volcanoes that arise throughout Central America and also, as I already said, they are inactive but the scientists were very disconcerted, finding more volcanic material than it should have, its provenance was a mystery.

Now, with a new investigation, they have discovered that the origin of volcanism in Panama is a somewhat novel finding, something that has never been seen before in the geology of the earth, because what they have discovered is that the volcanic material reached Panama through an underground geological passage. , of more than 1300 kilometers in length that directly connects Panama with the Galapagos Islands.

The Galapagos Islands have their origin in a hot spot, which is where a jet of material pushed up by the heat of the deep mantle emerges, forming what is known as a mantle plume. Where it reached the surface, this plume arises in volcanoes such as the islands Hawaii, the Galapagos or the Canary Islands, until the discovery that is now in the news, it was believed that the Mantel and Cas feathers ascended as a vertical column, but this one in particular has a horizontal deviation forming what the researchers have described as an underground geological passage .

An authentic river of lava between 1,300 and 1,600 kilometers long, researchers have reached this conclusion by analyzing the materials found in Panama and Costa Rica, and discovering that they have a chemical signature similar to those found in the Galapagos Islands.

Another clue was discovered when analyzing a cold spring in Panama, it turns out that it had abnormally high helium isotope ratios, finding helium on the surface of the earth is very difficult under the surface in the interior there are deposits that retain the high helium isotopes of the earliest era in the history of the planet.

Rising mantle plumes are the only known way these elements reach the surface, so the researchers' conclusion is that the spring and other similar sites were releasing gases from mantle material, and it wasn't a small amount because it is that they were recording the highest helium isotope ratios ever measured in a geothermal spring far from active volcanoes.

The researchers' conclusion is that mantle plumes not only ascend vertically with a column but can also sway and move horizontally to emerge at distant locations; Researchers believe that the connection between the Galapagos and Panama arose about 8 million years ago due to a natural gap in the subduction zone between the tectonic plates.

The researchers hope to collect more data to show exactly how far this Galapagos plume current extends, which will ultimately help shed more light on the complex geological processes occurring in the Earth's mantle.
