NASA and the defense advanced research projects agency, better known by its acronym DARPA, announced a collaboration to test a nuclear thermal rocket engine in space, this rocket has the ability to propel spacecraft on manned missions to Mars much faster.


This is essential, not only because it is always good to arrive at your destination earlier, but also because shortening travel time in space is vital, since it reduces exposure time to factors that are harmful to the health of astronauts, such as radiation or weightlessness and also saves volume of food and supplies.


Other benefits will be to be able to carry a greater load of scientific equipment and also have greater power for instruments and communications.


Nuclear thermal rockets can be three or more times more efficient than conventional chemical propulsion, which means that a ship powered by such a rocket could reach Mars in 45 days. This is not entirely new technology. , the last tests of nuclear thermal rocket engines carried out by the United States occurred more than 50 years ago, but now NASA and Darpa hope to make this type of engine a reality and put it in space starting in 2027.
