Another iceberg formed.

And so a giant iceberg detaches from the Brunt ice cap in Antarctica, the crack was discovered at the beginning of 2012 and now the rupture process has completed, giving rise to a new iceberg that receives the designation A-81, It has a thickness of about 150 meters and about 1550 square kilometers, that is almost the size of the island of Gran Canaria in Spain.

The British Antarctic Survey reported that the split occurred on January 22 between 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. UTC, it happened during a spring tide; It should be noted that the Halley VI Research Station, where glaciologists are studying this behavior of the ice sheet, has not been affected by the calving event, although in 2017 this scientific station had to be moved to a more safe, as it was in quite a dangerous location at the time.

It must be clarified that this event has nothing to do with climate change, it is only part of the natural processes of Antarctica, it will not affect sea level either because the ice sheet was already floating on the water, but It is still an impressive phenomenon and a potential danger to navigation, although it is normal for these giant ice sheets to remain circling the continent while they slowly disintegrate.
