The new analysis published in the journal Science, based on images of the rocks that outcropping within the crater on its western side, confirms that this outcrop was in fact a delta of a river based on the sedimentary layers.

At the outcrop it appears that the river delta led to a lake that was calm for much of its existence, until a dramatic change in climate caused episodic flooding at or near the end of the lake's history.

The researchers believe that the sediments in the crater could contain traces of ancient watery life, on their mission in the future perseverance will search for locations to collect and preserve sediments, these samples will eventually be returned to earth where scientists will search for Martian bio signatures.
