A piece of interstellar matter here on earth.

On January 8, 2014, an asteroid exploded in the Earth's atmosphere off the coast of Manus Island, Papua New Guinea, apparently few detected it, and it only caught the attention of two researchers, Abraham Loeb and Amir Siraj.

Amir Siraj is a college student in the double degree program at the Harvard University Conservatory of Music in New England, but in addition to piano he studies astrophysics, one more demonstration that art and science are perfectly compatible.

The speed at which it was traveling caught their attention, it hit the earth at about 160 thousand kilometers per hour, although its relative speed with the sun was 210 thousand kilometers per hour and that is much greater than the speed of known asteroids.

At the distance that the earth is from the sun, any object that moves faster than 42 kilometers per second or 152,200 kilometers per hour will be in an unlimited hyperbolic orbit with respect to the sun, this means that it is too fast for the gravity of the sun can catch it and therefore that object can enter and escape freely from the solar system, unless it is clear that in its trajectory it meets a planet like earth, which is what happened to this object that crashed on Manus.

In the study carried out by the two researchers in 2019, it was argued that the speed of the object together with the analysis of the trajectory of its orbit demonstrated with 99% certainty that the object had been created far beyond our solar system and that possibly it came from deep within a distant planetary system, perhaps from a star in the disk of our Milky Way galaxy.

As surprising as the research was, since it meant that a chunk of interstellar matter was found right here on earth, the paper was never peer-reviewed, nor published in a scientific journal, as some of the data needed to verify their calculations were considered classified by the US government.

Now it is news because scientists from the United States Space Command have officially confirmed that finding made by Abraham Loeb and Amir Siraj, it has been in a memorandum dated March 1 and published on Twitter on April 6, in it Space Command Deputy Commander Lt. Gen. John E. Shaw said the 2019 analysis of the fireball was accurate enough to confirm an interstellar trajectory.
