The introduction of math in school

In Suriname a child starts at an early age with math.

For many children this is not so pleasant. They are given a series of numbers and math rules and often enough they don't know why.

That's how I grew up too. That's how I was introduced to math and that's how I continued along without knowing why I needed to know it all.

It wasn't until I was in college that I actually knew how important math is.

For example, in the first year we were introduced to some practical situations such as:

  • A mathematical model of crime in Trinidad and Tobago
  • How mathematical formulas can be used to calculate the time of death of a person (if a body is found somewhere).
  • How various agencies can manipulate the people by fiddling with numbers in a mathematical way.

These are things that make mathematics interesting. Of course you can't go into detail explaining these kinds of models to a 11 year old, but giving an introduction to what math can all be used for.

I very often get students at tutoring sessions who have absolutely no idea why math is important. But mathematics is actually used in every field of study. Some students use it more, others less.

I often get the question from my own family en friends: Will you become a teacher when you graduate?
Because people think you can't do anything else if you study math.

But as a mathematician you can actually work anywhere: at the bank, at insurance companies, in teams with other professionals such as engineers.

The interest in mathematics in Suriname is very small. People sometimes pull an ugly face when they hear I study mathematics.😂

There really needs to be a change in the education system, I think. Not just throwing numbers at them, but letting the children know how what they learn is applied in practice. Or more strongly, where it is applied.

And I am not saying that Math is the most important thing in the world. No, absolutely not. But if you have to take math tests over and over again from a young age, I do think you would also like to know what that math is used for.

Thank you for reading. ❤️

Whoever is directly controlling the V2K told me to kill myself.
They told me if I killed myself now it would save the lives of countless others.
Saying the longer I wait to kill myself the more people will suffer.

They are reckless and should have shown the proper media what they had before taking me hostage for 5 years. I know there are many in prison that dont deserve to be there because of this. Your stay in prison will not be fun @battleaxe and friends. People are going to want you dead when they find out what you did. I hope you die a slow painful death. You sick mother fuckers.

Its a terrorist act on American soil while some say its not real or Im a mental case. Many know its real. This is an ignored detrimental to humanity domestic and foreign threat. Ask informed soldiers in the American military what their oath is and tell them about the day you asked me why. Nobody has I guess. Maybe someone told ill informed soldiers they cant protect America from military leaders in control with ill intent. How do we protect locked up soldiers from telling the truth?

There should definitely be a shift in thinking and teaching mathematics. I remember when I had first gotten introduced to this subject matter and it was so bland, boring and abstract, that I only did just enough to pass the classes.

There's a community called StemSocial here on Hive, focused on Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics by the way. I think they would value these topics in their community. They also have a token called STEM, which you are able to earn if you use the tag "STEM".

@tanjakolader thank you dear.💚 I will check it out.

Yes, many students do this 'I only did just enough to pass the classes.'😫 I couldn't do that though. My mom was very strict, I was not allowed to come home with a grade that was less than 90%. 😩

You're content is already visible on StemSocial because of your math tag. :)
For a complete reference, here are the tags being used by the StemSocial community: stem, science, technology, engineering, math, stemgeeks

I recognize that 😅, but I think that there came a time - an age if you will - that my parents had to let go and could only ask that I do my best.

I've been a previous math and physics teacher and I've got the feeling of being the most unwanted teacher by my students. lol. 😅

Anyways, I tried my best to relate it to their respective courses and some real world scenario the best as I can.
