Scientists Claim That The universe Might Be Flat

The shape of the universe is something that we can only speculate on. That's because our field of view in contrast to the entire universe is so small that we just don't know what the larger picture entails.

It would be like speculating the shape of the Earth based on what we see in our day to day life. The reality can only be determined if we have a bigger picture. Unfortunately, for the universe, we just don't have it.

Also, if the universe is infinite, the matter of its shape becomes a moot point. However, if its size is not infinite, there must be an overall shape. And scientists have tried to determine this in a number of ways.

Their most recent method has suggested that the universe might be flat. This goes against what many scientists had thought. Commonly, people like to think that the universe is spherical (like a bubble).

A Flat Universe

To arrive at their conclusion, scientists at the University of Portsmouth measured the impact of dark energy on the universe. Dark energy is the mysterious form of energy that we know absolutely nothing about.

However, scientists do believe that it is dark energy that is causing the universe's accelerated expansion. So, to determine the shape of the universe, it is vital to understand how and at what rate dark energy is expanding the universe.

With their precise measurements, that are better than anything that has come before, the team found that the universe might be spatially flat. If they are right, they will have solved one of the hottest debates in astronomy.

One thing to note is that a flat universe wouldn't necessarily mean a universe that resembles a piece of paper. Due to the expansion, a flat universe can achieve a donut-like shape that is also considered "flat" in cosmological models.

It will be interesting to see what other scientists think about these findings. If the same results are produced over and over again, we might finally have an answer to what shape the universe has.

The Universe is banana-shaped! And so is the earth! Take a look into the rabbit's hole and you will see that I am right! The truth is over there, beyond the rabbit!

So flat earthers have given up on earth being flat and now want to confuse people with the universe being flat. Flat universe lends well into the creationism theory verse the big bang theory and the expanding universe theory. No doubt the flat universe people will come up with some reason why some galaxies have a bulge in the middle, why some galaxies appear to stand at oblique angles compared to others.

Explosions happen in space, when they do happen in space the shock waves travel in all directions not just along one flat plane.

These are not flat earthers though. These are scientists who made observations and came up with a suggestion. Also, a flat universe can incorporate the big bang theory too. The two are not mutually exclusive. By a flat universe, the scientists don't mean that the universe is 1D. It can be 3D and be flat at the same time. It's just that the scale is so huge that from our perspective, it seems round or some other shape.

Lots and lots of theories, there always will be. I myself lean more to the Bubble universe theory, that I can wrap my head around a little bit, but a flat 3D universe is a bit hard for me to see. The torus field as a possible shape I can see also, but I just have a hard time figuring a flat 3 dimensional universe. To me the terms flat and 3D are exclusive of each other, but then again I am neither a scientist nor a mathematician.

Personally, I lean towards a bubble universe too. Makes it easier to comprehend a possible multiversal structure, where each bubble is its own universe.

I agree. Lots of theories. To the point that it can get frustrating for anyone who wants to make sense of it all. I really really hope we have some concrete answers within our lifetime.

A topic beyond the human mind prowess. The universe is so big that we can even define it with the word "Big". If scientists get at it, In few years they may achieve this milestone.

Well researched article @sauravrungta.

Yes! Our minds just can't process the immensity of the universe. All we can do is derive mathematical models to explain it.
