It was a spectacular day because we made a stop in the famous town of Obidos which is a very old walled city, I did not enter to write about this site because I already published about Obidos, but at this time of year it is very nice to visit it as it has many Lights and attractions to share with the family, to go to Leiria we must go through Obidos so I recommend you go through here it will be worth it! You will feel like it was lived in the time of the kings with a very old wall that is well preserved!🤩😮😮

To summarize Obidos is a walled city that has a palace in the center that is currently a hotel, here royalty lived in the 18th century since this city was a gift that King Denis gave to his wife Isabel, after death From Queen Elizabeth the citadel passed from generation to generation more and more inhabited and with improvements, inside we find more than 3 Catholic churches, but before all this Obidos was a Roman fortification that served as a point of observation and surveillance towards the Atlantic!🏰🏰

It was my first time to visit the castle twice I tried and the first time it was closed due to the Covid situation, then on my second attempt it was closed for renovations, and as they say the third time is the charm xD, if you are in the capital I mean, in the center of Lisbon to get here would take an hour and a half of travel, I don't see it very far because you can visit two very interesting places on your way Obidos and Leiria, if you have time you can also go through Peniche, another small coastal city that has some magnificent islands!👨‍🏫👨‍🎓

If you want advice, go directly to Leiria since the castle's hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and on the return go through Obidos because it is decorated around this time and the streets are very beautiful in this Christmas atmosphere, we were here one time so we decided to continue our trip to Leiria🚖🚈🚝

Before building the castle many decades before the Romans had already inhabited the area and the castle was built on one of the highest hills in Leiria so it has a 360 degree view over the entire city, the Romans had seen this advantage and they built some fortifications here to defend the territory! decades later the king of Portugal Henrique Alfonso built the castle here in 1135, Henrique was the first king that Portugal had!🤴🤴🕵️‍♀️

When we read a little about the history of the conquests of Portugal we see that the Portuguese country confronted from the Spanish to the Arabs throughout its history, the idea of the construction of this castle was to defend the southern territory of Portugal since the cities of Lisbon and Santaren belonged to the Arab domain at the time! It did not take long and in 1147 Henrique reconquered Lisbon and Santaren which made the castle of Leiria lose military interest!👳‍♂️🧔🤴

As I walk, each square meter of the site tells a story, I am drawn to this space that was rebuilt and they are a set of wells in which the population that lived inside the castle collected rainwater, these cisterns as they were known fulfilled a very function. important since they were essential to irrigate crops and give water to animals, they also served for different uses including personal hygiene!🤔😮

At the time, it was normal for the kings not to spend money on rebuilding and maintaining structures that no longer served any purpose, so after the reconquests the place was forgotten and was basically in ruins, but after a few decades King Denis was the one who I rebuilt Obidos also wanted to rebuild the castle of Leiria, all this because he wanted to live with his wife Isabel within the castle facilities.💥💥

Currently the castle is the greatest tourist attraction in Leiria and one of the first Castles to be built in Portugal, therefore it has a great historical value, because the castle had fallen into ruins in the 16th century, some restorations had to be carried out but everything was made with experts so as not to alter the architecture of the time!🕵️‍♀️🕵️‍♂️

Inside the castle we find a church that has Gothic architecture and that was built in the 16th century, it bears the name: "Iglesia de Nossa Senhora da Pena" whenever I see these designs inside the churches it comes to my mind that they existed in ancient times characters that were advanced for their times, as they built things that today are impossible to build without heavy tools! all this added to very poor conditions made that people did not live more than 40 years!🤴👸

King Henrique had everything in mind when he built the castle because we reached an area where we have an excellent view of the city of Leiria, and at the time if Leiria received a military invasion from these windows it was possible to see the enemy many kilometers away. distance I remember reading that all the castle had a communication method that was to light a "fire" that was seen by other castles and warned that they were in the presence of the enemy!💥💂‍♂️💂‍♀️
