Go the more I research about the Roman culture I understand a little more why this civilization was a great power in its time, I was doing a little research and about 35 minutes from my house near the Creiro beach a Roman ruin was discovered that is very well preserved and that tells how the Romans lived and traded in their experience within Portugal! The main topic to be discussed in this post is about the "salt" technique, a technique that is used to preserve food and that has been used for many years, it is so effective that it is used to this day! make yourself comfortable and enjoy my post!
A LITTLE ABOUT THE ROMAN RUIN๐จโ๐ซ๐งญ/UN POCO SOBRE LA RUINA ROMANA๐ป๐ท
Well I discovered the site while doing tours of my long expeditions and weekly hikes! When I was walking through the Sierra da Arrabida I "discovered" these Roman ruins, therefore its location is on the beach of Creiro in the Arrabida mountain range, it is a preserved area for outdoor exhibition of a Roman ruin that operated between the 1st and 4th century after Christ, in itself the structure is a fish salting and Roman spa, it is very close to the mouth of the famous Sado River.
HOW THE SPACE IS DISTRIBUTED๐จโ๐ซ๐งญ/DISTRIBUCION DEL ESPACIO๐ป๐ท
This architectural map shows us how the areas in the Roman ruin are distributed, the translation that is in Portuguese says: (Industrial complex for the production of salted fish, between the (period I-IVd.C) factory units or spaces where they salted The fish, spa, warehouses and manager's room, although the translation is also written there, I would like to add that this type of factories almost always belonged to a small family of high society or a Roman with a high position who was taken to take charge of these factories to maintain power in a certain area (I mean to mark presence) It was a way of saying "we occupy Portugal"๐ฉ๐บ๐งญ๐๐โโ๏ธ๐๐ฒ๐ค๐ค๐ค๐ค๐ค๐ค๐ค๐ต๏ธโโ๏ธ๐ต๏ธโโ๏ธ๐ต๏ธโโ๏ธ๐ต๏ธโโ๏ธ๐ฎ๐ฎ๐ฎ๐ฎ๐ฎ๐ฎ๐ฎ๐ฎ
Era una forma de decir "ocupamos Portugal"๐ฆพ๐ง ๐ฆพ๐คบ๐คบ
HISTORY๐จโ๐ซ๐งญ/HISTORIA๐ป๐ท
In terms of history in Portugal there is another very famous Roman ruin in the area of Troya, it is a small archipelago that is next to this area and that also embraces the Atlantic Ocean like cetrobiga apparently all the cities had a communication because they were salted the fish, all were interconnected with roads that allowed commercial circulation between them! The Roman ruin of Creiro was special because it was the one that produced the most salted fish, so it could afford to export outside the country!
I would like to clarify that the Romans were not the ones who invented this technique, the technique of salting fish has CENTURIES, that is, we imagine the EGYPTIANS using it and it certainly was, many civilizations salted fish as a preservation technique, there is no specific fish To salt, you can actually salt any type of fish, although the Romans did not discover the technique, they were the ones who used it the most and perfected it! IT WAS SO MUCH PERFECTION that his legacy was marked in history, so much so that in Portugal at the end of the year cod is cooked that is salted and sold in supermarkets! I mean a very old technique that we still use today!
In their great empire the Romans were able to establish themselves in the Mediterranean basin, leaving evidence in many places, when we speak of a factory to salt fish, although it seems somewhat complex, it is actually a tank made on earth where the fish could be macerated using salt! Almost all the Roman ruins that have been discovered and that are well preserved date from the end of the 1st century, but in several countries there is evidence that fish were still salted until the end of the 4th century๐จ๐จ๐ฒ
The South of Spain was one of the regions where the first fish salting factory was discovered, this indicates according to historical records that when the technique began to be used it was immediately implemented in all the spaces where the empire had its presence! to the point of being able to trade with other empires.
WHAT HAPPENED WHEN THE EMPIRE FELL๐จโ๐ซ๐งญ/QUE SUCEDIO CUANDO CAYO EL IMPERIO๐ป๐ท
We can think by common sense that when the Roman Empire fell the salting factories stopped working, but it was not like that! It was a technique so well perfected that other civilizations occupied the lands that the Romans left behind, for example the Jews were a civilization that salted fish such as anchovies, tuna.
Other civilizations that continued the Roman legacy were the Visigoths and later the Arabs who occupied Portugal for many decades, For example many cities in Portugal have Arab names, the Portuguese constantly fought against the Arabs for territory!
A VERY COMPLEX SYSTEM๐จโ๐ซ๐งญ/UN SISTEMA MUY COMPLEJO๐ป๐ท
In the first photo you can see how a small "tunnel" was actually an aquaduct that circulated throughout the small factory, and the process of salting fish required fresh water, this was a stroke of luck because in this area there is very little fresh water, but they built the factory next to a natural water well, so the water was channeled to do the job! Let's remember that there were also spas here, not all Romans had the option of taking baths in pools like these!
I think the Romans were the first to create this system of natural pools, taking advantage of the water that emanated underground, or was carried by aqueducts, but if we see in the description they had hot and cold baths! very advanced because entering hot and cold water relaxes and helps heal muscles after a war!๐
As I mentioned before, here you can see a description of where the fresh water well that emanated from the earth was positioned and that was very well used for the work! The Romans were known to be a very clean civilization, so hygiene was essential for their culture, then we have a description of the warehouse area, basically here the fish were stored in MUD JARS after being salted, here they were kept for consumption or export!
