My STEM Course experience before the pandemic ­čÜÇ

Hello friends. ­čśÄ I want to tell you about the STEM course I took last year. I learned very good things there. When I first went to the course,I thought what we were going to do was very simple.

What is STEM? Let me tell you a little bit about that. STEM is an acronym created with the initials of the words Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. In STEM education, it is aimed that students can think sophisticatedly. They are asked to evaluate in many ways when trying to reach a solution on a topic.

When I went to the classes, we were split into groups first. Then they asked us to make a catapult, but they wanted us to do it with very simple materials. So we created a catapult with whatever materials we had then.

After the construction of the catapult, they asked us to build a bridge that would not collapse. That seemed easy. Our group managed to build a bridge that didn't collapse, but there were a lot of other groups who couldn't. When our educators came and checked, we saw the bridges collapse easily.

Then we were supposed to make a caliper that drew a circle automatically. It was the most difficult of them all. Many groups failed to do it. We also failed. We did a little of it but we couldn't manage to make it draw a full circle.

After the construction of the caliper, we started to design a fast-moving car. A race was going to be held among the teams. Some groups paid attention to the exterior of the car. They made cars that looked good. Some groups aimed to design something that would move completely fast. So we aimed the last one. It happened the way we wanted it to. Our car went pretty fast. We were at the top among the teams

They made us do all of these designs with simple materials. We had ordinary materials. It was up to us to choose which one to use. Everyone who attended the course was a teacher. After completing the course, we were also told to work with our students in this way:

  • Give the students simple materials, and tell them about the subject.
  • Leave the design decision to the students. It was necessary for our students to think sophisticatedly and brainstorm.

When we interfere with the students or tell them completely what to do, we just make them copy something. However, our aim is to let them create something and think about.

After these designs, we started the coding lessons which was the main reason I went to the course. Coding is very important today. It will be even more important in the future. Life is about coding today. In this part, we worked with Arduino.

Arduino is a physical programming platform consisting of a development environment that includes an I/O card and an implementation of the Processing/Wiring language. Arduino can be used to develop interactive objects that work alone, and can also be connected to software that works on a computer. source

That part was the one I was most curious about. Because I knew nothing about coding before. I wanted to learn it. Everything I learned was very important for me. We learned a few things at the beginner level. We could turn the lights on and off with the help of coding we learned about. It seems simple, right? and it's fun. Everything you've just learned seems important.

I was going to learn a lot more, but unfortunately I couldn't learn more when the courses were cancelled last year due to the pandemic. I'm thinking of continuing the courses when the pandemic is completely over and it opens again. Then maybe I'll learn to code. ­čśÄ

Kursa gitti─čim zaman ├Ânce gruplara ayr─▒ld─▒k. Daha sonra bizden bir katapult yapmam─▒z─▒ istediler. Ama bunu ├žok basit malzemelerle yapmam─▒z─▒ istediler. O an elimizde hangi malzemeler mevcutsa onlarla bir katapult olu┼čturduk.

Katapult (manc─▒n─▒k) yap─▒m─▒ndan sonra bizden y─▒k─▒lmayacak bir k├Âpr├╝ in┼čaa etmemizi istediler. Bu kolay gibi g├Âz├╝k├╝yordu. Bizim grubumuz y─▒k─▒lmayan k├Âpr├╝ yapmay─▒ ba┼čard─▒.
