Humans have previously reached the very bottom of the deepest trench. But only a few. And the depths of the Mariana Trench is such an extreme place that anyone getting there is still worthy of attention – it’s certainly a bigger deal than reaching the peak of Mount Everest. So, our congratulations go to the Chinese submarine Fensouzhe that reached the bottom of the Mariana Trench.

As the Chinese TV channel CCTV says – Fendouzhe reached the bottom at a depth greater than 10 kilometers with three researchers on board. The Mariana Trench is a 2550 kilometers long and 70 kilometers wide tectonic valley shaped like a gigantic half-moon that can be found in the Pacific Ocean east of the Mariana Islands. At its deepest – Challenger Deep – it is 10994 meters deep.

First humans went there in the sixties. The well-known film-director James Cameroon went there alone in 2012 and he described it as a desolate and alien environment.

The Chinese submarine Fendouzhe recently made a number of similar dives. And a few days ago they claimed the new Chinese deep-dive in a submarine with human crew onboard record. The record is now 10909. And for the first time, the dive was transmitted live. The holder of the world record is currently Victor Vescovo who reached 10928 meters deep just last year.

The bottom of the Mariana Trench suffers from extreme pressure created by the immense mass of water above it. It is more than a thousand times stronger than the normal atmospheric pressure at sea level. Yet, the waters of the Mariana Trench are full of life and the Fendouzhe submarine is currently taking samples of it.

Another part of the activities of the Chinese submarine is the research of deep-sea materials as the Chinese aren’t particularly secretive about their interest in deep-sea mining. Recently, they opened a research and training center for deep-sea operations such as deep-sea mining.
