The Pandemic as seen from the Biomedical Engineering point of view.

Hello fellow readers, today I bring you some great information regarding Biomedical Engineering personnel in times of pandemic, COVID-19 has helped to highlight some invisible professions that help health services, making them work properly.

During the COVID-19 events, Biomedical Engineering has suddenly become the most important engineering in the world. But how is it that engineering principles immersed in hospitals and clinics have moved to the frontline and help contain disease, as well as improve the lives of patients and healthcare workers?

Our professional profile is a very complex union of many careers; we have knowledge of biological sciences, electronics, electricity, mechanics, pharmacology, among others. This has helped us to demonstrate our potential in the battle against COVID-19. We have had to get involved in all decision-making processes to solve problems such as biosafety and disinfection, as well as innovation, acquisition, manipulation and maintenance of high technologies to keep patients alive.

There are countries where the advance of the pandemic was so enormous that they had to resort to facilities such as convention centers, sports fields, stadiums, airports and parking lots to convert them into temporary hospitals to meet the demand for health care. All this was achieved thanks to the expertise and knowledge of biomedical engineers, since the most important thing is to maintain relatively high quality health care while maintaining the highest biosecurity standards.

The day-to-day work of the biomedical engineer involves the supervision of hospital facilities with respect to medical equipment and biosafety, as well as the assistance of equipment in full surgery and intensive care units, contributing directly or indirectly to the health of the patient.

In Venezuela and with the difficulties faced by the public health sector, due to the economic, social and political crisis, coupled with a minimum wage of $6.66 per month that has forced many professionals in the sector to resign, this has added greater weight and responsibility to the biomedical engineering departments, but even with the difficulties faced, it is the desire to fight to save lives that moves all health professionals in Venezuela.

In our struggle and dedication, we have lived through happy moments of seeing patients overcome covid-19, painful moments of losing colleagues to this deadly virus, stressful moments of not being able to do anything to save a life in the terminal stage and complicated moments, but together with dedication and work we managed, and will continue to succeed in moving forward for the welfare of each patient who comes to our aid.

I dedicate this post to my coworkers and colleagues, who in difficult times have shown me that they are great heroes, that they are human beings with values and principles strongly rooted in helping without expecting anything in return, who have become my family when we have not been able to go out to see ours. A thousand thanks to you, my colleagues.

A ustedes mil gracias compañeros.
