This is my nightmare situation. My MacBook is 8 years old. Now Macs are generally made well and many people use them over ten years... but... I still worry. I can afford a new machine, but I keep putting it off, because... well, the money is better spent on my kids' savings and other things we need. But if this MacBook were to die someday, I have no older computers to replace it with. I have an automatic backup that takes place every night, and half my laptop's data is on iCloud anyway (more and more, Apple just uploads the entire contents of the users home folder), so if it did happen I shouldn't lose any data. But it would be annoying and frustrating. So.... I just keep hoping this MacBook will keep going

I hear you! And I am so glad I didn't use the date. 3 years ago I couldn't access the harddisk anymore but fortunately I had stored lots of data somewhere else. If you need a computer for your daily work i really recommend to get an emergency machine, so at least you can do some work before you get the real thing.
Fingers crossed man!!
