¡Hola Hiver!

Hi Hiver!

Today I will show you and discuss a device that is very useful and vital for use in the operating room. It is the vital signs monitor.

It is like a small television, but with a great mission and importance which is to show us the vital signs of the patient, such as heart rate, electrocardiogram, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, carbon dioxide levels, body temperature.

As I said a small monitor, but with many vital functions that tell us that the patient is well or bad.

At first like everything we do not know is a bit complicated to handle and configure it, because there are few buttons and many options hahahahaha! but with practice every day we become familiar with it.

Fuente
Frecuencia cardíaca: 66 latidos por minuto
Tensión Arterial: 137/81 mmHg
Tension Arterial media: 102 mmHg
Saturación de Oxigeno: 99%
Frecuencia respiratoria: 17 respiraciones por minuto

Heart rate: 66 beats per minute.
Blood Pressure: 137/81 mmHg
Mean Blood Pressure: 102 mmHg

Oxygen saturation: 99%.

A very common feature of the monitors is that for each parameter or each sign shown on the screen has a different color and a different sound.

This is very important because the person in charge of observing and watching over the patient's condition must be attentive to these details in order to anticipate any emergency that may arise.

The sound usually goes from a very sharp tone to a very deep tone and its speed is adjusted depending on the heartbeat, if the heart beats very fast we will hear an extremely fast and desperate sound.

If we look at the monitors, there are several numbers that reflect different waves.

The first parameter is green, it shows the heart rate, in adults the normal rate is between 60 and 100 beats per minute. Next to the number we can see some waves, and it is the reflection of the electrocardiogram, which tells me the electrical activity of the heart.

The second parameter is light red/pink, this shows the blood pressure, here we can see if a patient is hypertensive or hypotensive. Next to the number follows the continuity of the electrocardiogram waves. The normal adult is 100/60 mmHg to 120/80 mmHg.

The third blue parameter measures the oxygen saturation at blood level, this is done with a very well known device which is the oximeter. Next to the number we can see the arterial pulse waves.

In the fourth yellow parameter, the respiratory frequency is measured, where we can also see inspiration and expiration waves.

In the hospital where I work, Hospital Universitario Ruíz y Páez the devices and monitors we use are outdated, old and lately they are presenting more failures than normal for all the years of use, however they are still useful for all the movement of the operating room, which is where I provide my services.

There are many models of monitors and each one is specific with its parameters and accessories. Being unique by brand makes it difficult that if a component of a monitor is damaged it can not be easily replaced, that is also why these equipments must be treated with great care.

Among the different brands, the order of the vital signs to be evaluated can also change, as well as some monitors are more complete than others, i.e., they have more functions and better sensitivity when evaluating and reporting a result or value.

That is why it is important that the health personnel or person in charge of monitoring these monitors has a minimum experience to be able to interpret all the information that these devices provide for patient care.

It will be possible to prevent or start timely treatments just by watching and being attentive to significant changes in these monitors, such as tachycardia, tachypnea, bradycardia, bradypnea, heart attacks, angina, heart block, arrhythmias, respiratory depression, dehydration, among other pathologies.

This is one of the most recent monitors we have, however, its version is old, you can appreciate that it has more options and more vital signs to evaluate.
