Counterpart
Who would have ever said that the best series of the year 2019 after Christ would have been a series that had not attracted awards or furious criticism in its first season and that with the second was preparing to live a confirmation of how good it was done without letting who knows what explosion.
And instead here we are talking about a wonderful, surprising and courageous season of Counterpart, a series that has taken Fringe's baton and brought us into a parallel universe that meets our own, paving the way for the usual considerations on space and time travel but above all on the founding theme of true and great science fiction: the choice.
Counterpart builds us an entire episode "Twin Cities" which is perhaps one of the most beautiful episodes of contemporary seriality.
In that episode the theme of choice and reciprocity of our actions with respect to the world around us is raised to the maximum power.
How much do we influence the world with our actions? How much does our existence manage to create parallel worlds with every single and decisive choice we make?
Exitial and ancestral themes are continually re-proposed.
Who are we? How would we react to our "double"? What if he or she is the best version of ourselves? Would we be jealous? Would we go mad? Would we try to get better? Or would we destroy what good we could be?
On an individual level we could be as understanding as we are destructive, but it's on a social level that there could be real drama. A world that discovers the existence of a "better" but equal parallel world, almost identical how would it react?
Would it try to make contact? A collaboration?
Or would it try to steal the happiness of the other world? To steal its secrets?
Or even try to dominate it? Destroy it?
The human being is an imperfect and weak being, and even in his complexity and beauty he has always proved not to be as wise as we might think.
Our instincts guide us to selfishness and survival.
It is likely that discovering the existence of a better world would push us to do everything we could to have it. To kill, to steal, to cheat.
Counterpart tackles all this every episode and does so by building real, fragile, emotional and sometimes cynical characters, building characters who change facial expressions depending on what version of themselves they are playing.
Excellent, three-dimensional and tragic characters who seem to come out of a Pirandellian tale but who are more likely to find themselves in constant precarious balance with their psyches and emotions.
The rhythm can accelerate and slow down according to the moments and the twists and turns, although never missing, are well dosed.
J.K.Simmons is phenomenal but the rest of the cast is also up to it.
The season finale was very intense and dense with at least 4-5 memorable scenes and effective cues to allow the spectator to still have a spasmodic desire to see new seasons.
A great success, a big surprise this Counterpart.
To be noted and followed without fear and without any doubt.
Chi lo avrebbe mai detto che la migliore serie dell'anno 2019 dopo cristo sarebbe stata una serie che non aveva attirato premi o critiche furoreggianti nella sua prima stagione e che con la seconda si apprestava a vivere una conferma di quanto buono fatto senza però lasciar attendere chissà quale esplosione.
E invece eccoci qui a parlare di una stagione meravigliosa, sorprendente e coraggiosa di Counterpart, serie che ha raccolto il testimone di Fringe e ci ha portati in un universo parallelo che incontra il nostro spianando la strada alle solite considerazioni su viaggi nello spazio e nel tempo ma soprattutto sul tema fondante della vera e grande fantascienza: la scelta.
Counterpart ci costruisce un intero episodio "Twin Cities" che è forse uno degli episodi più belli della serialità contemporanea.
In quell'episodio il tema della scelta e della reciprocità delle nostre azioni rispetto al mondo che ci circonda viene elevato alla massima potenza.
Quanto influenziamo il mondo con le nostre azioni? Quanto la nostra esistenza riesce a creare mondi paralleli con ogni singola e decisiva scelta che compiamo?
Temi esiziali ed ancestrali vengono continuamente riproposti.
Chi siamo? Come reagiremmo di fronte ad un nostro "doppio"? E se lui o lei fossero la migliore versione di noi stessi? Saremmo gelosi? Impazziremmo? Proveremmo a migliorare? O distruggeremmo quello che di bello potremmo essere?
A livello individuale potremmo essere tanto comprensivi quanto distruttivi ma è a livello sociale che potrebbe esserci il vero dramma. Un mondo che scopre l'esistenza di un mondo parallelo "migliore" ma uguale, quasi identico come reagirebbe?
Proverebbe a stabilire un contatto? Una collaborazione?
O proverebbe a rubare la felicità dell'altro mondo? A carpirne i segreti?
O addirittura proverebbe a dominarlo? A distruggerlo?
L'essere umano è un essere imperfetto e debole e pur nelle sue complessità e nella sua bellezza ha sempre dimostrato di non essere cosi saggio come potremmo pensare.
Il nostro istinto ci guida all'egoismo e alla sopravvivenza.
E' probabile che scoprire l'esistenza di un mondo migliore ci spingerebbe a fare di tutto per averlo. Ad uccidere, a rubare, a imbrogliare.
Counterpart affronta tutto questo ogni episodio e lo fa costruendo dei personaggi veri, fragili, emotivi e a volte cinici, costruendo protagonisti che cambiano espressioni facciali a seconda di quale versione di se stessi stiano interpretando.
Personaggi eccelsi, tridimensionali e tragici che sembrano usciti da un racconto pirandelliano ma che più verosimilmente si trovano in costante equilibrio precario con la loro psiche e le loro emozioni.
Il ritmo sa accelerare e rallentare a seconda dei momenti e i colpi di scena, pur non mancando mai, sono ben dosati.
J.K.Simmons è fenomenale ma anche il resto del cast è all'altezza.
Il finale di stagione è stato intensissimo e denso con almeno 4-5 scene memorabili e spunti efficaci per permettere allo spettatore di avere ancora voglia spasmodica di vedere nuove stagioni.
Un bel successo, una grande sorpresa questo Counterpart.
Da appuntare e seguire senza paura e senza alcun dubbio.
