Our Gaming Behaviour Is Changing Fast

If you're about my age, you can probably still remember how it was when we were children.
Walking through the shelves filled with boxes of computer games in the store.
Various games for PC or console were waiting to be found by us.
With the CD in our hand, we went home and enjoyed exploring new worlds.
That's how it was back then.

But all that is history...

No More Boxes!

One of the biggest changes in the consumption of games has been the shift from physical to digital distribution. While physical copies of PC games are still available, many consumers now purchase and download games directly from digital storefronts like Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store. This has made it easier and more convenient for consumers to purchase and play games on their PCs.

No More Single Payments!

Another change in the consumption of games has been the rise of subscription services like Xbox Game Pass and Origin Access. These services allow consumers to access a library of games for a monthly fee, which has made it easier and more affordable for consumers to try new games.

Many games (mostly on PC) now use a free-to-play model, where the game is available to download and play for free, but the developer earns revenue through in-game purchases or advertising.
This has made it easier for consumers to try new games without having to pay upfront but also constantly attracts with new ingame purchases.

So, Yes!, gaming on PC and consoles has changed significantly over the last decade, with advancements in technology and new trends in gaming.

One of the biggest changes in gaming over the last decade has been the rise of mobile gaming. Smartphones and tablets have become increasingly powerful, and many people now play games on their mobile devices rather than on a dedicated console or PC.

In addition, there have been major advancements in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technology, which have allowed for more immersive gaming experiences. While VR and AR have been around for decades, it is only in the last few years that they have become more accessible to consumers.

Online multiplayer gaming has also become much more popular over the last decade. With the rise of social media and gaming streaming platforms, gamers can now connect with each other and compete in real-time from all around the world.

Overall, gaming on PC and consoles has undergone significant changes in the last decade, with new technology and trends shaping the way people play and interact with games.

I'm a bit of both worlds. I like the digital aspect and not having boxes and scratchable disks and things. Back in the day, my Morrowind disk was so scratched it was transparent in some places!! I have no idea how it still managed to work. 😅 I love the ease of just buying a random game online and having access to it immediately.

I do, however, miss buying a game, and that's it, that's the game. I dislike how things have moved to the expectation that developers update their game every month and add new content constantly, and if they don't that means "the game is abandoned! Waaah!" If it's not an MMORPG it doesn't need constant updates, in my opinion.

I also would love the return to single-player focused games and for people to stop shoving co-op or multiplayer into absolutely everything when in some games it's just not necessary. 😒
