Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist, is a side-scrolling action beat 'em up video game developed by Konami of Japan and released in 1992 for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. It is based on the popular comic book characters, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were the rage among kids during the early 1990s. So it was kind of obvious that they would be showing up on popular video game systems at that time. Naturally, being a gamer, I was caught up on the hype.

The Story

Evil Foot Ninja Clan leader Shredder steals the Hyperstone and use its power to shrink New York City and it's up to you to punish teach that villainous troublemaker not to mess with the Turtles! Pick your favorite hero Turtle to slash through 5 action-packed levels packed with brand new challenges that will make you hurl your pizza lunch. Beat that crazy Shredder before he controls our whole planet!

The Graphics and Sound

The graphics are good. Everything in this game looks like in the early Ninja Turtles cartoon series. The turtles and their enemies have got detail . The backgrounds are very good too.

The sound is average. There is a little Intro tune in the game that is a good rendition of the classic cartoon theme. The rest of the music is good and catchy.

There are standard punches, explosions, and the usual stuff. But the voices are bad and just sound weird.

The Gameplay

This is a beat-'em up action game. You have to choose one of the 4 Ninja Turtles and go around beating up Shredder's ninja and robot army going through five levels. At the end level of each one then, you must face a damn boss. You have a regular combo attack, a flying ninja kick and a special moves attack. That special attack decreases you energy. You will not be using it much though, since the regular attack is sufficiently strong enough.

Gamers might assume that this is a rehash of the Super Nintendo game, TMNT IV: Turtles in Time, except that it has a different title and story. The levels look the same, and you fight the same bad enemies.

This does not mean it is bad. But when you look past the fact that it kinda looks like a rehash game, it is surprisingly fun. However, you may not like it if you think a game should be different and innovative, or at least unique

Playing the 2 player coop with a friend or using a different Ninja Turtle gives it some decent replay value. And you may add that extra challenge by letting your character turtles hurt each other, play through the entire game as the weaker character turtles, or try to beat the game without using a continue.

My Verdict

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist is a fun game if you like beating up everything in your way and do not care about it being a rip-off of the Super Nintendo Ninja Turtles version. But if you want a different, original game. You will dislike this one.

Play this on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive or your favorite Sega emulator. Go try and enjoy with a friend.

Let's keep on gaming in the free world!
