My Played Video Games Review: Alien 3 for the Sega Genesis

Alien 3 is a run and gun video game developed by Probe Software and it was based on the 1992 sci-fi action movie of the same name. The game was released for the Sega Genesis in 1992 and published by Acclaim Entertainment.

The movie was disappointing for me but this game was better in suspense and thrills. In case you are wondering, the cover is almost the same as the Japan Sega Mega Drive version.

The Story

The ALIENS move horribly fast, spew acid from their mouths and are right behind you! The handy motion tracker is your only device for warning. No time to think, no time to breathe... you go RUN!

Your vision is limited in these air ducts. It is hard to breathe. Face-huggers can jump at you from anywhere. But you have got good firepower... blast them ALIENS with your combined assault rifle with a grenade launcher and flame thrower combo. You know what you gotta do... rescue the other prisoners and end this! Just keep telling yourself, "This is not really that movie happening. It is only a damn game!!!"

The Graphics and Sound

The graphics look good, Ripley, the shaved bald lady hero, is animated well, and the aliens move great too. Everything looks surprisingly well. Sprites have very good details, especially when the scary aliens bust out of people’s guts.

The game music is in the right mood, just as music should be. It is the sound effects that are outstanding. Gunfire sounds, screams, squeals and sounds of aliens busting out of guts are all top-notch. But some of the sounds are a little grainy.

The Gameplay

Your weapons are your best friends against the aliens. The main objective of the game is to rescue all of the human prisoners in the level and escape before the timer runs out. The prisoners are stuck to the walls with alien secretions and have alien babies in their bellies waiting to burst out if they are not rescued and treated.

The problem is that rescuing the prisoners gets a bit tedious. Especially when you are looking for that one last prisoner that you left at the start of the level. This gets more difficult as it goes on. So it makes good sense that you rescue prisoners at every level until the final fight with the alien.

The replay value is below average. Looking for the prisoners is a chore, and it is all you get to do most of the time while shooting incoming aliens. The game does not take too long to finish but you will not complete it the first time around.

My Verdict

Alien 3 does offer good traditional, action platform gaming that most gamers will like. While different from the movie, Alien 3 has enough thrilling action and weapons to go around for the action game fans in spite of the tedious rescue objective.

Go play this on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive or play it on easy to start emulators.

Let's keep on gaming in the free world!
