The deity from my Town : Yoruba Tradition
In the history of the Yorubas, the famous Oya was one of the wives of Olukoso Sango Itiolu, the Alaafin of Oyo, she is a native of Ira in Oyun Local Government Area of Kwara State, Nigeria.
As history says, Oya was Sango's favorite as she was faithful to him. Apart from being a wife to a very powerful king, she also possess mystical powers, she was tagged a very strong woman.
Oya returned to her father's home land Ira, after the death of her husband Sango
History has it that upon her return to her father's land, her paraphernalia was found in the forest and there were visible signs that something big had sunk into the ground, it was believed that Oya had sunk into the ground.
The forest where Oya sank is known as Oya's grove till today.
History say, Oya was worshipped by her people and Sango's people, some people worshipped her because of her mystical powers which they believed she possess and was using to support her late husband during his reign.
People would come from far and near to worship Oya at the Oya's grove every year with Onira (King of Ira land), Oya's leading and his chiefs.
In Oya's grove, there is a mark that shows where Oya sank, the grove has been given some facelift by her people and her house still remains at the king's palace till today as remnants of former glory of Oya.

That's good 🙂 Thank you
Wow @adeife2 what a great headdress of Goddess Oya, very imposant. I never heard of her, we not often have female warrior goddesses in our tradition here
thank you so much for you entry to the IYC :-)
Thank you.
Oh, really! We have them in numbers here, the likes of Moremi, Osun...
yea? Intersting, maybe a cool topic to write a post about, what they were doing, why people believed in then, where the stories about them came from :-)
Yeah, you're right!
Will write on them when I get a break from work and will make sure I tag you to the post so you can find it, that's if you don't mind?
