Structure of the Laryngoscope

• Mango: sirve para coger y controlar el instrumento. En su interior se encuentran las pilas o baterías necesarias para prender la luz, que generalmente suele ser fibra óptica debido a su capacidad de iluminación, aunque también se utilizan otro tipo de bombillas incandescentes o led. También contiene la cuchilla que se introduce en el interior de la laringe durante la laringoscopia, aunque en contra de lo que pueda parecer por su nombre, no producen ningún tipo de corte en los tejidos.

• Handle: used to hold and control the instrument. Inside are the batteries necessary to turn on the light, which is usually fibre optic due to its illumination capacity, although other types of incandescent bulbs or LEDs are also used. It also contains the blade that is introduced inside the larynx during laryngoscopy, although contrary to what may appear from its name, it does not produce any type of cut in the tissues.

• Hoja: Una hoja que sirve para apartar la lengua y la epiglotis. Al final de la hoja se encuentra usualmente una fuente luminosa (una pequeña bombilla o un punto de luz de fibra óptica de origen en el mango). La hoja puede ser reutilizable, en cuyo caso debe esterilizarse después de cada uso, o desechable.

• Blade: A blade that serves to move the tongue and epiglottis apart. At the end of the blade there is usually a light source (a small bulb or a fibre optic light point originating from the handle). The blade may be reusable, in which case it must be sterilised after each use, or disposable.

Tipos de laringoscopio

Types of laryngoscope

Existen dos tipos de estos instrumentos: flexibles o rígidos.

There are two types of these instruments: flexible or rigid.

• Laringoscopio rígido: es un instrumento cuyo tamaño es el mismo siempre y se utiliza en laringoscopias poco profundas. Es del que hemos estado hablando en este artículo.

• Rigid laryngoscope: this is an instrument whose size is always the same and is used for shallow laryngoscopy. It is the one we have been talking about in this article.

• Laringoscopio flexible: aparte de poder visualizar la parte menos profunda de la laringe, permite adentrarse más profundamente gracias a un tubo flexible extensible. Suelen tener una cámara para poder ver en tiempo real el interior del paciente y la posterior visualización del vídeo.

• Flexible laryngoscope: apart from being able to visualise the shallower part of the larynx, it allows to go deeper into the larynx thanks to an extendable flexible tube. They usually have a camera for real-time viewing of the inside of the patient and subsequent viewing of the video.

El personal de anestesia y de cuidados intensivos es el que más utiliza este instrumento, mientras que los bomberos y los paramédicos también llevan este equipo para salvar vidas.

Anaesthesia and Intensive Care staff are the most common users of this instrument, while firefighters and paramedics also carry this life-saving equipment.

Hoy en día, gracias a la tecnología, se han diseñado laringoscopios digitales que permiten al médico tener una mejor imagen de lo que ocurre en el interior del paciente.

Today, thanks to technology, digital laryngoscopes have been designed to give the doctor a better picture of what is going on inside the patient.
