I am going to comment and show photographs of a spider species, Argiope argentata, a spider that is commonly found in home gardens, but can also be found in other environments such as clearings, grassland edges and margins of roads and trails; wherever there is low herbage and shrubs. The spider is widely distributed in Central and South America.

The web of this spider is not markedly asymmetrical, and may vary in size according to location and also from day to day. The web is almost always inclined between 5° and 20° from the vertical. This spider hangs from the center of the web in a characteristic cruciform (cross-shaped) attitude. Its activity is diurnal, and it feeds principally on stingless bees and orthopterans, but it also feeds on insects of the orders Odonata, Hemiptera, Lepidoptera, Diptera and Coleoptera.

Beyond the generalities I mentioned, I will emphasize the predatory behavior of this spider.

The spider's web serves two functions. It is a trap and at the same time a transmitter of vibrations. In Argiope argentata, prey capture consists of a series of stages. These stages involve: localization, immobilization and preparation for transport, transportation, and orientation of the prey prior to feeding.

Localization consists of locating the prey in the web and depends on the spider's vibration receptors. Starting with the spider in the hub, if a prey strikes the web, the spider is alerted; at this stage the spider's behavior is plucking the prey and if the prey drops out of the web or escapes, it stops the plucking and the spider returns to a pre-alert state. If during the plucking the prey remains in the web, the spider ends up running towards it.

Immobilization is accomplished by biting and/or wrapping in silk. All insects, except the smallest, are eventually wrapped. If the prey is vibrating when the spider reaches it, the spider may immediately wrap it in silk. If the prey is not vibrating, but is inert or kicking, in some circumstances the spider may to make mistakes and fails to switch off the wrap-response. The wrap response is switched off by a stimulus from small prey. These prey are seized with the jaws, plucked from the web and carried to the hub. It is also switched off by some stimulus from most Lepidoptera (probably a response to surface texture), and also by the situation of being presented with prey already wrapped in spider silk.

The spider gives two types of bites, short and long. The wrap-response is followed by a short bite and the long bite is followed by the wrapping. In the case of lepidopterans (butterflies and moths), the spider takes a long bite before wrapping. This special response to Lepidoptera is probably adaptive since it applies very rapid restraint to insects which can escape rapidly from spiders' webs.

In wrapping as a first response (before biting), the spider throws silk threads over the prey, using its hindmost legs. This process fastens the prey against the web and is followed by the turning of the trapped prey in a bobbin-like fashion, while the spider lays the silk it wraps directly from its silk-spinning organs.

In wrapping after biting, the process does not normally involve the throwing of threads. With large prey (for example, dragonflies) the wrapping threads may be laid by the spider running around the prey rather than turning it.

Possibly, the long bite must be maintained until the prey is immobilized by spider venom, and the short bite, since it is applied to an already immobilized (wrapped) insect, has no major function in restraint.

In most cases the prey is cut out of the web prior to transportation.

Heavy prey are carried to the hub suspended from their silk-spinning organs on a silk thread, and lighter prey are carried on the chelicerae (mouthparts). If the prey is carried on a thread, the spider attaches it to the hub silk when it arrives the hub and then turns to assume its normal position.

If the prey is carried in its jaws, it briefly rewraps the prey and attaches it to the hub before the spider turns to assume a head-down position. When the spider has resumed its normal position at the hub it may spend some time apparently at rest or cleaning its legs and pedipalps before commencing to manipulate prey.

Once the prey is in the hub, it is manipulated and oriented before feeding. Such manipulation may enable the spider to assume its feeding position without dropping the prey, and may involve finding a site to insert the mouthparts. The prey is seized in the anterior legs or hauled up on its thread and the spider commences to turn the pack in the first and third legs while making small bites at the surface. This stage ends when the spider resumes the cruciform posture and commences to feed from the anterior end of the prey.

It should be noted that these spiders feed at a site from which they can continue sensory scanning of the web (the hub) and this necessitates transportation from the site of capture. Although the spiders can detect prey in the web from the capture sites, they seem unable to locate them without returning to the hub.

A video of another spider of the same species can be watched.

Excellent and resourceful post! Thank you so much for sharing it on Hive.

From my observations of the cousin species, Argiope lobata, the predation behaviours are exact to what you've described. I think it's universal among the Argiope genus, possibly among the subfamily, too. And, minus a few fine details in the behaviour, it's broadly the behaviour across all orb-web spiders in the family.

I didn't know about the stimulus triggers, however. That is fascinating and, in hind sight, makes a lot of sense. I wonder if these are true for many web-dwellers. From watching button spiders, I've noticed a similar reaction to certain prey movements on the web and once caught and wrapped. To a further similar degree, it's the same with the funnel nursery-web spiders, Euprosthenops.

Again, thanks for sharing insight into some of the workings of spiders!

Hi, it is likely that predation behaviors are as you say, very similar within the genus. One spider that has always caught my attention are the species of the genus Verrucosa, because they face upwards in the web. I once wrote about them. Thanks for your complementary information.

Oh, beautiful spider. And yeah, the top-facing is pretty unique. I've not heard or seen that happen before. I've seen feather-legged spiders (Ulorobid) face left and right, though never upwards. Spiders never cease to amaze me.
