In my house we have 4 adult tortoises (3 females and 1 male). Below I show photographs of a female from different angles. In adults it is easy to differentiate between males and females because females have a flat plastron. The plastron is the ventral part of the shell.

The purpose of the above photographs is to have references of what a live tortoise looks like in comparison with the photographs I will show from now on, which correspond to the shell of a dead female tortoise.

The shell of tortoises and turtles is a remarkable evolutionary novelty that defines the order Chelonia. The shell of tortoises and turtles is found in three general forms based on the nature and degree of ossification: hardshells, softshells, and "leatherbacks". In all the photographs in this entry I show those of the species Chelonoidis carbonaria, which is hardshells.

The shell is composed of two main parts, the dorsal carapace and the ventral plastron, connected along the midflanks by lateral bones bridges. Altogether, the shell contains more than 50 dermal bones that are homologous to no other bone in any other order of vertebrates. The shell of tortoises represents an extreme development of the dermal skeleton among tetrapods, or animals characterized by having four limbs.

The carapace consists of bones derived from ribs, vertebrae and dermal elements of the skin. Tortoises lack true lumbar vertebrae, and their thoracic vertebrae (together with the sacrum and first caudal vertebra) become part of the carapace. The dorsal portion of the vertebrae fuses with the midline of the shell, while the costal processes that give rise to the ribs grow dorsolaterally into the dermis, instead of moving ventrolaterally. Thus in tortoises, the dermis expands under the influence of the ribs to form the rudiment of the carapace, and the ribs later become part of the shell.

It is worth noting, in relation to what I mentioned in the previous paragraph, that unlike any other vertebrate, the limb girdles of tortoises develop within the ribs rather than outside them, that is, their pectoral and pelvic girdles are within the rib cage. Also, the vertical orientation of the pectoral and pelvic girdles buttresses the carapace and provides strong ventral anchors for the humerus bones of the front legs and femur bones of the hind legs. In this sense, tortoises are the only vertebrates whose limbs are found deep to the ribs.

The plastron evolved from the clavicles, interclavicles, and abdominal ribs.

The plastron bones include a single central entoplastron. The other bones of the plastron are divided into pairs by a central seam. Anterior to the entoplastron are the epiplastrons. Behind to it are, respectively, the hyoplastrons, hypoplastrons and xyphiplastrons.

The vertebrae, except those of the neck and tail, are fused to the medial aspect of the neural bones of the midline of the carapace, and a fracture of the midline of the carapace could result in damage to the spinal cord.

What are ribs in other animals, is a carapace in the tortoise, and that carapace is firmly fastened to the spinal vertebrae, so that the animal cannot leave its "home", as snails do.

The bones of the carapace include a row of neural bones along the midline. The anterior midline bone is the nuchal, and the posterior midline one is the pygal (not in the photograph, the position is indicated). Lateral to the neural bones are the costals.

In the following photographs, note the reliefs on the outside of the carapace bones.

This is because the carapace is covered with horny scutes, which are the equivalent of scales in other reptiles. These scutes are made of keratin.

The growth that is noted occurs by the addition of new keratinized layers to the base of each scute. Greater cell activity at the perimeter of each new layer causes the scutes to widen gradually. The scutes of the carapace are termed marginal, cervical, pleural and vertebral. The one seen in the image above is a vertebral scute.
