James Webb, Our New Eye in the Sky

During this year, the James Webb Space Telescope, which was launched on an Ariane 5 rocket from French Guiana on December 25, 2021, has been in the news several times.

The James Webb, originally known as the Next Generation Space Telescope, is a joint project involving 20 countries and operated jointly by the European Space Agency, the Canadian Space Agency and NASA. [1]

It was conceived and projected since 1996, as the replacement instrument for the Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes and after countless delays, due to budget shortfalls, human and hardware failures, and even the Covid 19 pandemic, it was launched at the end of last year, Finally, after a 29-day journey, during which several of its mechanisms would be gradually activated to deploy the sunshield and the mirror, it will arrive at its final operation site on January 24, 2022 and conclude its calibration on April 27, 2022. [1][5]

The James Webb consists of three main components: the 6.5-meter main mirror, consisting of 18 individual hexagonal panels of gold-coated beryllium, each mounted on its own alignment and calibration mechanism, the sunshield consisting of five sheets of Kapton, coated with aluminum and silicon, with a size similar to that of a tennis court, whose main purpose is to keep the mirror and instruments at temperatures close to 0°K, and finally the scientific instruments that are attached to the main mirror, and are responsible for giving the James Webb its superior capabilities. These instruments are in turn four [1][2]:

  • MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument): it is the instrument of observation of the mid-infrared, spectrum in which are visible, the coldest and farthest objects, due to the great redshift of the electromagnetic radiation they emit, while the remaining instruments are cooled only by the sunshield, MIRI also has its own cryogenic system. [1][2]
  • NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera): Although the MIRI can observe objects at higher redshift, its observing resolution is lower than that of the NIRCam, which will be the main observing instrument of the Jame Webb, its observing spectrum covers the long-wave visible and near-infrared, where it will be its main study objective, trying to focus on the oldest and farthest objects in the universe. [1][2]
  • NIRSpec (Near-Infrared Spectrograph): this instrument is capable of studying the near-infrared spectrum of up to one hundred objects simultaneously. [1][2]
  • NIRISS/FGS (Near-Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph/Fine Guidance Sensor): This pair of instruments is part of the telescope's near-infrared image stabilization and pointing guidance system, allowing the detection of the light coming from the objects and stabilizing the image obtained from them, with the purpose of orienting the telescope correctly. [1][2]

In addition to these components, the James Webb is located on a platform called a bus, which houses the telescope's computational control, communications and propulsion components, as well as the truss that supports the other components. [1]

The main difference between the James Webb and its predecessors lies not only in the dimensions of its main mirror, which is almost three times that of the Hubble (2.4 meters), but also in the fact that its observing instruments are configured to explore the sky in the long-wave visible spectrum (orange and red) and the near- and mid-infrared, which allows exploring even more distant objects, with a large shift of the light they emit to the infrared.

Another advantage of James Webb, compared to previous space telescopes, is its location, since it is located at the Lagrange L2 point of the Earth's orbit, a point where the gravitational forces of the Earth and the Sun are balanced, giving it a position in which it rotates around the Sun, in synchrony with the Earth, from which it has a full view of space, throughout the year with lower fuel consumption and greater use of the Sun to power its panels. [5]

These characteristics make the James Webb the observatory with the greatest observing power of all, both space and terrestrial. This gives it the possibility of studying the most distant objects both in time and distance, as well as being able to provide the first images of exoplanets and study the absorption spectrum of their atmospheres to determine their composition.

Finally, in its first images, the James Webb has provided incredible views of Jupiter's clouds, the Carina nebula, Stephan's quintet of galaxies, among other objects, but one of the most impressive is that of the SMACS 0723 galaxy cluster, which demonstrates its deep-field capabilities, the sharpest and deepest infra-red image of the universe ever obtained. [3]

This image, each of the more than one thousand luminous objects observed, is a galaxy, and corresponds, in its entirety, to a portion of the sky, equivalent to a grain of sand, held between the fingers, observed at outstretched arm's length. Undoubtedly, the James Webb and its images of deep space will continue to be the talk of the town in the coming years, especially when it dedicates its time to the study of exoplanets and their composition, in search of those that could harbor life.
