The Warp Drive

In 2012, the Voyager 1 space probe became the first man-made object to pass through the heliosphere, the region of the solar atmosphere where the influence of the solar wind exists, so that even though it is in the solar system, because it is under the influence of solar gravity, it can be said to be in interstellar space, being exposed to the charged particles coming from other stars, which are repelled by the solar atmosphere, shortly after Voyager 2, which follows a different route, would also leave the heliosphere, making both spacecraft the human spacecraft, which are at a greater distance from Earth. [6]

In its journey, Voyager 1 has traveled a distance of 22,909,417,919 km (159 AU) and is currently oriented to the center of the galaxy, but before it must leave the Oort Cloud which could be said to delimit the solar system and which it will reach in 300 years, and could exceed in about 17,702 years, while it continues to travel at 17 km/s, at which it does so today. [6]

Although the Voyagers are not the fastest human vehicles in existence today, merit that belongs to the Parker Solar Probe, which will reach a speed of 195 km/s, at its closest approach to the Sun in 2025. It is obvious that at speeds such as those at which these devices travel, interstellar exploration is not possible, since it would require the development and financing of projects lasting hundreds of generations, either to take a robotic probe to another planetary system or, even more difficult, a generational spacecraft with human crew members. [7]

However, there is a mathematical theoretical development that could open a window of hope for interstellar exploration, it is the Alcubierre Metric, proposed by the Mexican physicist Miguel Alcubierre, is a solution to the field equations of the Theory of General Relativity, which would allow, under certain conditions, an object to exceed the speed of light.

One of the most severe restrictions of the theory of relativity is that it is not possible for matter to exceed the speed of light, since the amount of energy necessary to accelerate any object to this speed would be infinite.

In addition to the fact that an infinite amount of energy is necessary, there is also the complication of time dilation at relativistic speeds, which means that for an observer on the ground witnessing the journey of one of these ships, his time will run much faster than for his counterpart in the ship, consequently, while for the traveler who moved at the speed of, for example, 99% of c, 8.8 years of round trip to Alpha Centauri will have passed, for the rest of the people on Earth, about 64 years will have passed, and this figure would increase exponentially, as the speed increases, until it becomes indeterminate when reaching the speed of light.

Although matter cannot move at the speed of light, it has already been mentioned in other publications that galaxies move away from us faster, the farther away they are, even reaching speeds higher than those of light outside the observable universe, how is this possible, if matter cannot move at such speeds; this happens, in the case of galaxies, because they are not the ones that move, it is the space itself between them that expands. And from the approaches of general relativity there is nothing that prevents this expansion from occurring at speeds equal to or even greater than c.

It was based on this phenomenon that Miguel Alcubierre, proposed a metric according to which a point object can move from one point to another, inside a deformation bubble, without technically moving, doing so at speeds even higher than those of light, this would happen because it is not the object itself that moves, since it would remain fixed inside the bubble, so the spacetime itself around it would move, thus allowing it to "circumvent" the barrier of the speed of light. [1]

The deformation bubble or Alcubierre bubble, which would surround the object, would move as if it were surfing a wave, by effect of the contraction of spacetime in front of it and its expansion behind it. This displacement could in principle be made at any speed and since it is not the object that moves, but the spacetime around it, it would not be affected by time dilation.

However, Alcubierre's approach is fundamentally theoretical. As the physicist explains, matter of negative density would be necessary to create the bubble, i.e. exotic matter, which would make it possible to form a bubble of negative energy. Although the existence of exotic matter is not ruled out, and this seems to be shown by the Casimir effect, having enough of this type of matter, if it is possible at all, represents a technological impossibility, which would be far from being solved. [1]

Despite the impossibility of having a negative energy bubble as proposed by Alcubierre, researchers associated with the group of researchers led by Alexey Bobrick, members of the Applied Physics group, responsible for advising governments and companies on physical issues, claim to have found solutions that would allow creating deformation bubbles, without requiring for them negative energy, with the limitation that these would not allow moving at speeds equal to or greater than c, but very close to it. [2]

On the other hand, as a result of an experiment performed for DARPA, studying the possibility of extracting energy from the Casimir effect, by a team from the Limitless Space Institute under the supervision of Dr. Harold G. White, by chance managed to detect a micro/nanometer scale deformation bubble formed by negative energy, which would prove the possibility of creating such structures at least at microscopic scale, although it is not the objective of the study, the researchers are very interested in continuing with this line, so at the conclusion of their research for DARPA, they propose the possibility of introducing, as a nanometer ship, a tiny metal ball in the middle of one of the bubbles, to study its behavior. [3][4]

Although the construction of a practical warp drive is still far from being achieved, there are developments that seem to show that it is possible, if perhaps not to overcome the barrier of the speed of light, then at speeds similar to it, to make the exploration of our near interstellar environment feasible.
