I think calling them illiterate is quite disrespectful to them, they were knowledgeable and that knowledge passed on to new generations., which evolved into more sophisticated study to learn new things and inventions, take example of humans learned to ignite fire with stones and made things out of stones for hunting and protection and they learned how to draw.
I hope you'll correct the word illiterate.
