Looking for areas of cloudless sky - Buscando áreas del cielo sin nubes.

Clouds cover our planet approximately 67 % and when you look at the sky it can be anything from completely cloudy to medium cloudy to completely clear or cloudless.

Las nubes cubren a nuestro planeta aproximadamente en un 67 % y cuando se mira el cielo este puede estar desde completamente nublado pasando por medianamente nublado hasta completamente claro o sin nubes.

Some time ago I was following the sky, to see if I could photograph an area of clear sky. In the rainy season (September), between 7:00 and 8:00 in the morning, I managed to capture the following photograph in the southwest of where I live.

Hace tiempo estuve haciendo seguimiento al cielo, para ver si lograba fotografiar un área del cielo claro. En época de lluvias (septiembre), entre las 7:00 y 8:00 de la mañana, logré capturar la siguiente fotografía en el suroeste de donde vivo.

I applied the "camara raw" filter (Photoshop CC 2017) to the photograph in case there were any unnoticed clouds, but there were none.

A la fotografía le apliqué el filtro "camara raw" (Photoshop CC 2017) por si había alguna nube no percibida, pero no había.

I also captured a photograph almost at the zenith, that is, vertically upwards, but facing south, and there was no cloud.

También capturé una fotografía casi en el cénit, es decir, en dirección vertical hacia arriba, pero orientándome hacia el sur, y no había ninguna nube.

Then I took another photograph in the northwest and when I applied the same filter, some clouds appeared more clearly. Low or thin clouds and the surface have similar brightness and temperature, so they are often confused.

Seguidamente capturé otra fotografía en el noroeste y al aplicarle el mismo filtro aparecieron con mayor claridad unas nubes. Las nubes bajas o finas y la superficie tienen un brillo y una temperatura similares, por lo que a menudo se confunden.

In the photograph almost at the zenith, but facing north, there were no clouds.

En la fotografía casi en el cénit, pero orientándome hacia el norte, no había ninguna nube.

Clouds are the largest attenuating factors of solar irradiance in large areas of the planet, so cloud cover is a useful predictor of the solar resource. If the sky is clear, this allows irradiance to be predicted from solar geometry, surface albedo or the ratio of light energy incident on a surface to that reflected, and even the optical properties of aerosols, ozone and water vapor through a radiative transfer calculation.

When clouds are present, the fraction of time that clouds obscure the sun, the optical thickness of the clouds, and secondary effects, such as reflections from the sides of clouds and between cloud layers, can have important effects on the proportion of irradiance reaching the surface.

As clouds appeared in the northwest I continued to follow the sky and as the dry season (January) arrived I managed to capture other cloudless photographs between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m. from the southwest to northwest.

But the most interesting thing was that the cloudlessness extended from the northwest to the northeast, and even at the zenith there were no clouds.
Pero lo más interesante fue que la ausencia de nubes se extendió desde el noroeste hasta el noreste, e incluso en el cénit no habían nubes.

It was found that globally, there are slightly more clouds over land during the afternoon and less clouds over the ocean in the afternoon, but overall, the fraction of clouds over land is about 55 %, whereas the ocean cloudiness is much higher and reaches about 72 %.

It should be noted that high clouds occur in the tropics and the radius of liquid water cloud particles is significantly larger over the ocean than over land.
