Yesterday at 12:50 pm, I was sitting in a shop stall and having tea, when I suddenly saw a strange insect. Its hind legs are unusually long and there is a long thread-like part towards the tail. I immediately took picture and searched for it on the i-Naturalist app and found out some great information about it.
Name and identity: According to the app, it is a parasitic wasp or parasitoid wasp of the Stephanidae family. Its Genus is Foenatopus. Although it is not possible to be sure about its specific species from the picture, it is certain that it is an insect belonging to this genus.
Habitat and habitat: These are mainly insects from various tropical regions of the world, including our Indo-Malayan region. They love to live in forests, orchards or around old wood.
Food and reproduction: Their life cycle and diet are very strange. They are mainly parasites. The harmful insects (such as beetles) that bore into the wood of trees and lay their larvae or young, this beetle uses its long tail (ovipositor) to lay its eggs on the larvae inside the wood hole. The eggs hatch and the young hatch and grow by eating the harmful larvae.
Beneficial and harmful aspects:
They do not have any harmful aspects. They usually do not cause any harm to humans or sting. Rather, they play a huge beneficial role in protecting our valuable trees and forest resources by naturally destroying harmful insects that bore into the wood.
