Los invertebrados son un grupo animal bastante diverso y el día de hoy comparto con la comunidad algunas fotografías de un artrópodo que visitó mi hogar está semana. No es un insecto, a diferencia de las publicaciones anteriores, pero su estructura es bastante interesante.

Invertebrates are quite a diverse group of animals and today I share with the community some pictures of an arthropod that visited my home this week. It is not an insect, unlike the previous posts, but its structure is quite interesting.

Los diplópodos, conocidos como milpiés son artrópodos multisegmentados que habitan en lugares húmedos. Poseen un par de patas por segmentos y generalmente no superan los 10 cm. Este ejemplar es bastante pequeño y cuando lo encontré en el jardín, ya estaba muerto.

Diplopods, known as millipedes are multi-segmented arthropods that inhabit damp places. They have one pair of legs per segment and generally do not exceed 10 cm. This specimen is quite small and when I found it in the garden, it was already dead.

Grandes caminadores - Large walkers

El término Miriápodos nos habla de muchos pies y es que así es su estructura. Sus patas se mueven de una manera sincronizada y esta ha sido una de sus ventajas adaptativas. Algunos científicos consideran que esta sincronicidad puede ser explicada desde las matemáticas, pues su cuerpo se mueve formando ondas que se repiten en toda su longitud y a esto se le ha llamado caminata sinuosa. Algunos libros indican que solo llegan a tener 400 pares de patas y no mil, como lo indica su nombre.

The term Myriapods speaks of many feet and that is how they are structured. Their legs move in a synchronized manner and this has been one of their adaptive advantages. Some scientists consider that this synchronicity can be explained from mathematics, since their body moves forming waves that repeat along its entire length and this has been called "sinuous walking". Some books indicate that they only have 400 pairs of legs and not a thousand, as their name indicates.

A diferencia de los insectos que poseen tres tagmas, estos poseen dos regiones que son cabeza y tronco. Es en el tronco donde se insertan sus pares de patas. Su cabeza posee las antenas y sus falsos ojos. Su mandíbula es muy similar a los insectos incluso, con leves modificaciones.

Unlike insects that have three tagmae, these have two regions, the head and the trunk. It is in the trunk where their pairs of legs are inserted. Its head has antennae and false eyes. Its jaw is very similar to that of insects, even with slight modifications.

Se plantea que en el Carbonífero y el pérmico estos artrópodos llegaron a medir más de un metro de longitud, pero en esos períodos la mayoría de los seres vivos poseían grandes tamaños. El hecho de ser pequeños trae muchos beneficios que conducen a la supervivencia de la especie.

It is thought that in the Carboniferous and Permian these arthropods reached more than one meter in length, but in those periods most of the living beings had large sizes. Being small brings many benefits that lead to the survival of the species.

Debido a que ya llegó a mis manos muerto, no pude grabar un buen video de su desplazamiento. La preservación en alcohol hizo que se rompiera su exoesqueleto tal como se logra ver en la fotografía. Las lentillas micro a 60X fueron las que me permitieron captar mejores imágenes.

Because it already came to my hands dead, I was not able to record a good video of its displacement. Preservation in alcohol caused its exoskeleton to break as you can see in the photograph. The micro lenses at 60X were the ones that allowed me to capture better images.

Estas especies se cuidan mucho del calor pues su esqueleto es más débil que la de los insectos. Y, estos se alimentan de plantas y hongos. Generalmente son inofensivos para los humanos, aunque algunas especies puede que no lo sean.

These species are very careful of heat because their skeleton is weaker than that of insects. And, they feed on plants and fungi. They are generally harmless to humans, although some species may not be.
