Greetings dear friends of the Hive platform, welcome back to my blog dedicated to the study and dissemination of content related to the fascinating world of arthropods. In this article we will share interesting data about a family of moths that contains a large number of species that are widely studied for the negative impact that their caterpillars have on certain plant species.

Moths or nocturnal butterflies form the backbone of the order Lepidoptera, they occupy approximately 90% of all specimens that are located within this order. The colorful diurnal butterflies on the other hand, are actually a somewhat reduced group of the order Lepidoptera, however, given their habits they prefer the daylight hours to feed or move, so we can appreciate them more frequently, while the vast majority of moths are night lovers, considering all Lepidoptera as essential for the pollination processes required by plants.

These insects are very popular in the world, so they are constantly studied, the long journeys that are capable of certain species have amazed experts, showing that despite being insects with apparently "fragile" morphologies, they can use strong gusts of wind to make long migrations within the same continent. Also, these arthropods have one of the most fascinating biological cycles that exist, where the differences or changes from a simple egg to the adult stage are very radical, so much so that even their mouthparts change from one stage to another, so their feeding habits also change according to their stage of life.

One of the most numerous families that exists within the order Lepidoptera is the Noctuidae, this has an estimated 11,000 described species, the vast majority being nocturnal specimens, which is the reason for the name of the family. Also, despite being essential in the pollination process, this family has many species that are of importance in agronomy or related careers, because unfortunately the caterpillars of these moths have a great attraction for plants that are used in agricultural production systems, so they are capable of destroying crops in a very short time if the necessary measures are not taken.

@abneagro(1).png

Within the family Noctuidae and the subfamily Plusiinae is the genus Chrysodeixis, which is composed at the taxonomic level by 18 species, having most of its species the facility to overcome the threshold of crop damage while they are caterpillars, so they can end up becoming pests. Due to the high presence they can have within agroecosystems, these moths are well recognized; however, all these specimens are very similar from the morphological point of view, so the confusion when identifying them is always present.

Some of the best known are Chrysodeixis argentifera, Chrysodeixis eriosoma, Chrysodeixis chalcites or Chrysodeixis includens, the latter being one of the most recognized and studied because of its migratory habits, making it a common problem in agriculture.

As you have been able to appreciate, the species in the photograph Chrysodeixis includens is the most common within its genus. At first glance their peculiar colors stand out, having a predominant brown color with black, white and golden patterns, the latter color being the most striking of all. In addition to brown, they can also have variants in their predominant color, being able to be gray or black, however, the shape of the patterns will remain the same as seen in the specimen in the photo.

For the identification of this type of moths, every detail must be taken into account, since all those that integrate the genus Chrysodeixis share the same characteristics, except for some of the patterns that extend along their wings. Likewise, their long antennae also stand out, which are usually placed backwards when they are perched on a surface.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the moths of the family Noctuidae are their eyes, which are compound, but with the reflection of light they have a black spot that resembles a large pupil, for this reason they are called "owl moths". It is important to note that, these insects have their eyes composed of thousands of units called ommatidia, for this reason both Lepidoptera and Odonata have one of the best visions within the world of arthropods; what is seen as a pupil is nothing more than an optical effect generated by the light receptors that are in these large and complex visual structures, this effect is often called "pseudopupil".

This visual effect makes this and other moths in this family more striking to the eye, making them very beautiful when you stop to admire their details.

@abneagro(4).png

Unfortunately, I do not have photographs of their caterpillar stage, but I can tell you that the caterpillars are green and have a white line running down the central part of their body. During this stage they are potential pests of various crops, so they are considered polyphagous in terms of their strong attraction to a wide variety of plants. Likewise, these caterpillars possess their respective 6 (real) legs in the thoracic region and two pairs of false legs almost at the end of their body, this makes them very different from the usual caterpillars of other Lepidoptera species.

Lepidoptera are complete metamorphosis insects, so after passing through the egg and caterpillar stages, comes a pupa or chrysalis stage, during this stage they stop feeding and their body and organs undergo very drastic changes. In the photographs you can see part of the chrysalis stage, the caterpillars usually use a leaf where they are covered with a layer of silk and make the chrysalis, this is usually green and as it matures it takes a darker shade.

@abneagro(5).png

The last stage that these insects have is the adult stage, in this stage the mandibles disappear to have a long proboscis that they use to obtain nectar from the flowers; here you can notice the difference in feeding habits, since the caterpillar feeds on plant tissues, while in the adult stage their food is nectar. During the adult stage these insects contribute to pollinate the flowers. These moths also have a protuberance on the back of their thorax, this part is formed by millions of colored scales, the same ones that cover their entire body.

@abneagro(8).png

In these photographs you can appreciate some of the differences between moths and butterflies. Moths have a more robust body than day butterflies. In the photo on the left you can see how thick their legs are, having the necessary strength to be able to cling to the aerial parts of the plants, likewise, butterflies usually have their wings in a vertical position when they are not in flight, while moths place them in a horizontal position, this can be seen in the photographs used in this publication.

@abneagro(9).png

Regarding the way they fly, these moths do it in an erratic way, this flight behavior is given thanks to evolution, since these lepidoptera are nocturnal, so that they compete with other nocturnal animals such as bats, the latter being their main predators; Similarly, the members of the Noctuidae family have developed an organ that allows them to capture changes in the sonic frequency generated by the echolocation of bats, thanks to this they use an erratic flight to seek to outwit these predators.
