These arthropods have different sizes, some are only a few millimeters long, while other species easily exceed centimeters, being part of the largest insects that inhabit our planet.

On the other hand, the order Coleoptera is the most numerous group that exists in the entire animal kingdom, having specimens distributed throughout all continents of the world, being rare in areas with very low temperatures.

One of the most scientifically recognized families is the Coccinellidae, this family is home to all those small beetles that are commonly called ladybugs, with more than 5,000 species distributed in approximately 320 genera. These small armored insects have colors ranging from red, orange or even yellow, having several black spots distributed along their rounded bodies, aspects that are very characteristic of this type of beetles.

Due to the large number of species and the similarity of their morphology, these insects are generally difficult to identify accurately when you do not have some knowledge about the family and also when the geographical distribution of certain specimens is unknown; being usually confused with certain members of the family Chrysomelidae.

These insects of the order Coleoptera are highly appreciated within the agricultural sciences, this is because these small arthropods are natural predators of a wide variety of insects that have a negative tendency to become pests, such is the case of aphids, a group of the order Hemiptera and the suborder Sternorrhyncha, being these a very frequent threat on various crops, including ornamental plants.

The ladybug species called Coleophora inaequalis has demonstrated an amazing effectiveness in the biological control of aphids and other insects, so despite being a species endemic to Australia and certain Asian countries, it was reproduced, introduced and distributed around the world to contribute to the control of insect pests that regularly lower the yield of agricultural production.

This specimen has the typical basic characteristics of all insects in its morphology, having its body clearly divided into 3 tagma or regions (head, thorax and abdomen), it also has 3 pairs of very short legs that are used as locomotor units to move on certain surfaces, especially in various parts of plant organisms.

Similarly, their bodies are usually very rounded due to the shape of their completely hardened anterior wings (elytra); this shape of their bodies contributes greatly to differentiate them from other coleoptera such as those of the family Chrysomelidae, which have a more elongated body.

@abneagro(4).png

The species Coelophora inaequalis generally presents 4 irregular black spots on each of its elytra, and a black line dividing each elytra can also be seen. These characteristics tend to vary a little depending on the area where they developed, and may or may not present a union in each of the 4 spots on its body, this aspect can generate doubts when identifying them.

The differences between the male and the female are not usually very clear, being practically the most outstanding difference the size and the color that they present on the head. These aspects can be seen in the photographs.

Their life cycle is usually very fast, spending only 5 days as eggs, then about 20 days as larvae, 10 more days as chrysalis and finally they will reach adulthood. These insects undergo complete metamorphosis just like butterflies (Lepidoptera), for this reason they have developmental stages as larvae and as chrysalis or pupa.

@abneagro(6).png

When a ladybug emerges from the chrysalis it will not have the characteristic reddish color and much less the black spots, these will appear as the hours pass, this we can notice in the photographs, in the one on the left is a newly emerged, while in the photo on the right is the same specimen after a few days.

On the other hand, the color and stains in these insects are the result of years of evolution, these colors are a direct warning to predators, because the taste of these small members of the family Coccinellidae is not at all pleasant, this feature is known as aposematic coloration, and is present in a great diversity of living beings, both vertebrates and invertebrates, even in plant organisms.

@abneagro(7).png

This coleopteran will feed on other insects during practically all its life, for this reason they live an active life on plants, where they can be very close to other invertebrates that serve as a food source. The larvae go through a total of 4 stages, in each of which they will increase in size and undergo slight changes in coloration.

The care and preservation of this and other arthropods is essential to maintain a beneficial balance for all living beings, because each of them has its own ecological niche within nature and the different ecosystems that make it up. The members of the family Coccinellidae are not only captivating for their beauty, but their insatiable appetite contributes to the application of fewer chemical products on crops, for this reason it is necessary to protect and respect them.

We rarely see yellow or orange coloured ones over here in Germany, mainly the bright red colourd coccinellids .. awesome publicstion again @abneago ^^ .. I add it to the DNA library again as one really awesome addition .. I am soooo glad for your constant contribution to it, your posts are sooo valuable 😍

Greetings friend @adalger, yes, the vast majority of Coccinellidae are red, but there is a minority that have other predominant colors such as yellow or orange, the species shown in this publication is one of them, they have many variants in their color and black patterns on their elytra, for this reason is known as "variable ladybug". I believe this species is not found in Germany, although it has been introduced to many countries for biological control of aphids in crops. Thank you very much for your appreciation and support.
