The order Diptera is one of the most numerous and well-known groups within the world of arthropods, the insects belonging to this order have been studied extensively due to the fact that most of its members have a tendency to be vectors of a considerable variety of diseases; the reason is that most of these insects need to feed on blood in order to survive, which makes them hematophagous and therefore, they transmit various microorganisms that produce certain diseases in vertebrate organisms.

This order is divided into 2 suborders, which are the Nematocera generally comprised of mosquitoes and the Brachycera in which the insects commonly known as flies live.

Diptera(1).png

On the other hand, one of the most notable differences between the aforementioned suborders is that Brachycera have a reduction in size of the antennae, while members of Nematocera have these sensory organs more elongated and with a feathered appearance in most cases. In turn, both suborders have the same degree of negative recognition, since in addition to feeding on blood, some are attracted to our food, so they can also transmit certain bacteria or parasites.

Diptera(2).png

One of the most striking families of the suborder Brachycera is the Tabanidae, in which the group of flies commonly known as horseflies live. This family has more than 4,000 species classified so far, being one of the most numerous within the order Diptera.

On the other hand, the diversity at the level of colors and designs within this family is really incredible, an example of this is in the specimens that we can find in the genus Atylotus, and is that, some of its species have a golden coloration along their body, this makes that in some countries they are called golden flies. This fantastic genus has an estimated 36 described species, where despite being a very low number compared to other species of flies, they have managed to inhabit almost every continent of our planet, undoubtedly, the evolutionary process of these insects has been successful and magnificent.

One of the most striking features of insects are usually their compound eyes, which are made up of thousands of optical units known as ommatidia, this type of visual organs are much more developed in flying insects, also, the coloration of these is usually very diverse among insects, however, I would dare to say that they are much more colorful in flies, specifically in members of the family Tabanidae, where in addition to having very bright colors, also get different colorful patterns given by the impact of natural light.

Diptera(4).png

The color of the compound eyes of these flies and other insects is generated by millions of pigmented cells that divide each of the ommatidia. When an insect dies, this cellular group also begins to disappear, so that beautiful color begins to diminish progressively indicating that the organism is now completely inert. In the photographs you can appreciate this great change in the coloration of these great visual organs.

The specimen presented in this publication corresponds to an Atylotus loewianus, which belongs to the family Tabanidae and the subfamily Tabaninae. Similarly, it is important to note that this is a male, one of the main differences between the two sexes is in their eyes, as in males these organs are united, while in females there is a separation between the two, this occurs among members of the Tabanidae family and also in the Syrphidae to mention a few examples.

This dead specimen that I was able to find, will serve to detail perfectly its external parts. As you can see, its morphological characteristics do not differ much from other members of the class Insecta, having its body divided in 3 regions, being these the head, thorax and abdomen. The head houses parts such as the eyes, mouthparts and antennae, while the thoracic region has 6 legs and a pair of wings, and finally we have the abdomen, which in addition to possessing the digestive system, also houses the reproductive organs.

A key point that differentiates diptera from other insects is that the first have only one pair of wings, this pair is the anterior, while the posterior became after years of evolution in small structures known scientifically as Halteria, these parts of their morphology allow them to have a more effective and faster flight, so the flies are among the best flying organisms that exist, being able to reach speeds of up to 30 kilometers per hour.

Diptera(6).png

The species Atylotus loewianus is much larger than the common fly Musca domestica, moreover, most females of the Tabanidae family feed on blood, while males prefer sugary substances obtained from flowers (nectar), horseflies lay their eggs in very humid places, so places like swamps or areas where there are small water reservoirs are perfect for the hatching of larvae that will soon become the new generation of horseflies.

All flies are a fundamental part of the food chain, where they serve as the main food for many organisms, both vertebrates and invertebrates, making them key to maintaining the optimal balance within terrestrial ecosystems.
