Ant season with the rains (Eng) // Temporada de hormigas con las lluvias (Esp)

Greetings dear users of the Hive platform, welcome to my blog dedicated to the study of the fascinating world of arthropods. In this post I will share relevant information about a species of the family Formicidae, which is very common in tropical countries, being appreciated by some and considered a pest by others.

Ants in general are among the most fascinating living beings that exist, their lifestyles conducted under very complex social rules, have allowed them to colonize the world with a truly amazing success, and there is no place in the world where there is no one of the more than 15,000 species that have been scientifically classified.

These insects work daily without rest, which is why the workers usually live very little time, since they only rest for intervals of only 1 minute, if this cycle is interrupted, the life of the entire colony can be endangered by not being able to obtain the food and the necessary maintenance of the anthills.

The queens are the brain or the mind that moves the anthill, the constant renewal of all the members that live in their nests depends on them; as I mentioned before, the workers usually live very little due to their demanding work, for this reason the queen must lay eggs frequently to maintain the optimal numbers necessary for the correct functioning of her colony.

This type of arthropods are extremely important for terrestrial ecosystems, their constant work helps to recycle and decompose organic matter that accumulates on the surface of our planet, in the same way, the galleries they make underground contribute and facilitate gas exchange between the soil and the atmosphere, thus many of the microorganisms that are responsible for giving life to the soil are greatly benefited, so the productivity of this surface increases and gives rise to new life from plant organisms.

Among the more than 15,000 species that exist, some ants need to make use of certain plant species, such is the case of the ants of the Attini tribe, which are commonly known as "leaf cutters". Many people tend to think that these specimens feed on the leaves or flowers that they bring to their nests, but the reality is different, since they need plant remains to reproduce a fungus that is the main food that guarantees the optimal reproduction of these species.

The species shown in the photographic material corresponds to a Atta laevigata queen; all members of the genus Atta are hymenopterans that require plant remains to produce these fungi, for this reason at the agricultural level are considered potential pests, because in a matter of a few hours can defoliate a plant, This generates considerable economic losses to agricultural producers, likewise, another known genus with these same capabilities is the Acromyrmex, although these have a much smaller size than members of the aforementioned genus Atta.

When the rainy season arrives, all fertile male and female ants prepare to perform one of the most amazing shows appreciated within entomology or directly within myrmecology (science that studies ants). This show is known as Nuptial Flight, which consists of the mating process that all ant species perform, the future queens or princesses have wings initially to be able to mate while flying with the males, once they achieve it, then fall to the ground, take off their wings and look for an ideal place to start founding their own colony.

The only purpose of the males is reproduction, so they die once the sexual act is performed, fulfilling their role perfectly and leaving behind everything necessary at the genetic level so that a new generation can populate new areas, maintaining an essential ecological cycle for these species to remain on the planet.

On the other hand, when the future queens Atta leave the nest, they usually take with them spores of the fungus that will feed their future daughters, they usually cultivate them first and then begin to lay eggs. The first ants to hatch are called "nurses", they have the task of protecting and caring for the queen at the beginning of the nest.

Worker ants are usually infertile, although this condition does not apply to some genera of ants. A queen has the amazing ability to bring to life males and females at will, the number of ants of any sex is usually related to the needs required by the colony, so that from the eggs fertilized by a male will be born females, while from the unfertilized eggs only males will come out, this ability to decide the sex of their generation is called Haplodiploidy.

Like all insects, ants have their body divided into their typical 3 segments (head, thorax and abdomen), and they also have that characteristic "narrow waist" that divides their thorax from their abdomen, this feature is typical of all Hymenoptera belonging to the suborder Apocrita.

Very close to this waist they possess the so-called metapleural glands, thanks to these parts of their body they can reproduce antibiotic substances that keep their body healthy and free of pathogenic microorganisms.

Formicidae(8).png

Despite being able to become "pests" during certain times of the year, we must be aware that they are also living beings, they are organisms that, like us, must search daily for food in order to survive, these ants do not invade our spaces for pleasure, but we are the ones who continually move them or expel them from their spaces when we build our homes or modify an ecosystem to obtain food, so we should never think about the extermination of any living being, the right thing would be to control their populations when necessary and respect those that do not represent any danger to us.

Welcome to my blog my friend. In South America they are one of the most common species of ants, it is one of the most constant cases that come to me when they attack crops and being the reproductive season due to the rains, I decided to talk a little about them. On the other hand, I don't know in which country you are, but these ants are from the American continent, maybe this is the reason why you haven't found any so far. Thank you very much for your appreciation and support, greetings my friend! :)
