Microsoft Excel Tips: -2^2 = +4 and NOT -4!!!

avatar

In this video I go over a very useful tip in Microsoft Excel 2007 (it should be the same for all other versions of Excel). Basically typing in a calculation like -2^2 is calculated as (-2)^2 = +4 in Excel. Every other calculator I have ever used calculates it as -(2^2) = -4. It took me over an hour to see why my school assignment was giving the wrong answer in Excel and figured out that one of my calculations involved the calculation -x^2, which I thought it would return a negative number but Excel gave a positive. Make sure you watch this video because it could save you a lot of time if this ever happens to you!!

I use open source free Libre Office, not Microsoft Office. For casual user there is no point in paying for Microsoft, maybe if someone uses very very advanced tools there is a sense, but for most people there is no point in it.
