Easy Fibonacci Scarf

I love to do/teach math and I love to knit. These interests are highly compatible, since knitting is applied geometry. I present here, for the math-anxious knitter, a simple scarf that illustrates a common math sequence: the Fibonacci sequence. This sequence is:

0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34...

After the first two numbers, the next number in the sequence is the sum of the two previous numbers. Fibonacci numbers are sometimes called "pine cone numbers" for the way they appear in nature in things such as pine cones and flower petals.

Each color block has a number of garter ridges corresponding to a Fibonacci number. A garter ridge is 2 rows of knit stitches. I just alternated two colors, but you could choose a different color for each block. Let me know if you knit one, and please share it with NeedleworkMonday if you do!

Fibonacci Scarf

Cast on any number of stitches for the width of scarf you want.

Knit 1 garter ridge (one ridge equals a front row and a back row.) Change colors.

Knit 1 garter ridge. Change colors.

Knit 2 garter ridges. Change colors.

Knit 3 garter ridges. Change colors.

Knit 5 garter ridges. Change colors.

Knit 8 garter ridges. Change colors.

Knit 13 garter ridges. Change colors.

Knit 21 garter ridges. Change colors.

Knit 34 garter ridges. Change colors.

Knit 55 garter ridges. Change colors.

Knit 89 garter ridges. Change colors.

If you continue, the next numbers are 144, 233, and 377. Check your yarn supply before committing to the bigger numbers, though!

I have always known crocheting and knitting is all about numbers and counting, patterns and series but to do a Fibonacci sequence is very clever. haha! I love it! 😍
