Things that Go Boom

I am 95% certain that this is mount Baker, which is "a 10,781 ft (3,286 m) active glacier-covered andesitic stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc and the North Cascades of Washington State in the United States" ( Wikipedia, 2024 ) . Apparently, it's one of the most active in the Cascadian range. It's also one of the snowiest; it has more snow and ice than all other volcanoes combined (excluding Rainier). The first written record of this volcano is from a Spanish explorer in 1790, and he called it, Gran Montaña del Carmelo ( Wikipedia, 2024 ).

I was on a ferry similar to the one in the image when I took this picture. The ferry travels between the British Columbia mainland and surrounding islands. The waters are close to the border with Washington State, which is where the volcano is located.

It was sunny with a harsh light overhead. It was difficult to get a sharp shot of the mountain because it was distant. There was also a haze in the sky that blurred distant objects. I reduced exposure value to darken things a bit then sharpened the image with some post-processing.

The last major eruption of Mount Baker occurred 6,600 years ago, but it has remained active to this day.

The blues are really striking in the photograph and in real life. It has a calming and soothing effect. The boats glide gently across the shimmering water. Clear summer days are magic in the ocean. 🌞
