Once or twice a week, I try to go for walks in the woods near my house. I always find wonderful things on each walk. I think it is a matter of having a keen eye to detect those sublime elements that are part of nature. The lived experience and the photographs allow you to treasure these elements without damaging the environment in that eagerness to appropriate something so beautiful.

Today I found a pink banana plant. Being a 1.5-meter plant, along flower stalk coming out of the middle of the plant caught my attention. It had the appearance of a stem that contained a cluster of pink fruits and ended in a curious inflorescence.

As I approached, I was fascinated because I confess I have many years in the area of gastronomy and nutrition, and I had never seen pink bananas. My curiosity as a gourmet made me photograph this kind of banana plant and inquire about it, and what a surprise I got.

Where is Musa velutina native?

It is a plant native to Southeast Asia whose cultivating countries are India, Vietnam, and Malaysia (Papua). It can also be found in some Indonesian islands, Japanese and Chinese provinces. Not to be confused with the Chinese red banana, which belongs to the species Musa coccinea.

Musa velutina is a plant that grows very well in humid subtropical climate zones, areas where the temperature ranges from 6-30ºC with an average of 18ºC and relative humidity of 70%. Today, this plant can be found in countries of Central America, the Caribbean, and part of South America.

This plant was first identified by German horticulturist and botanist Hermann Wendland in 1875. This plant was cultivated in Hannover (Germany) thanks to some seeds collected by his colleague Gustav Mann during an expedition in Upper Assam (India).

Uses of Musa velutina

It is a plant that can have a diversity of uses. It can be used for ornamental, food, medicinal, and textile purposes. For this reason, it was amazing to have the opportunity to come into direct contact with it.

From the food point of view, the fruits when ripe are edible. They have a soft pulp, are less sweet, and are less fragrant than the traditional banana (Musa paradisiaca). The peel of this banana is pink and smooth. Its pulp is slightly beige. It is consumed as a fruit and made into baby food. When the fruit is not ripe, pickles are made from it. This bunch in the photograph had 14 units of fruit but was still unripe.

However, it is not only the fruit of the plant that is used. For example, when parts of the plant are burned, the ashes are used to season some typical Southeast Asian dishes. The flowers are also eaten sautéed or in salads. The food industry extracts starch from its rhizome and pseudostem. Its leaves can be used to wrap some Malaysian preparations during cooking.

From the medicinal point of view, curative properties are attributed to various parts of the plant from the root, leaves, fruits, seeds, and flowers. Many of these uses have to do with gastrointestinal conditions such as diarrhea and dysentery, respiratory conditions. With some of its parts, poultices are made to relieve burns on the skin. Also to the infusions made with the seeds are attributed hypoglycemic effect due to its high content of soluble fiber. The seeds are also rich in vitamin C, which is why they are used to combat scurvy.

As you can see, it is a real treasure that nature has given us and I can not be more grateful to live the experience of knowing it and being able to photograph it.
