The purpose of this publication is to provide information on certain aspects of interest about a group of hymenopterans belonging to the family Vespidae, a taxon that stands out for being home to a large portion of those insects commonly known as wasps. Thus, I invite you to learn interesting details about the wasps of the genus Protopolybia.

Automeris cf. jucunda.png

Among the flying insects that can be seen in natural spaces, the Hymenoptera are the most common and dominant, along with Coleoptera (beetles), Odonata (dragonflies), Diptera and Lepidoptera. This order, scientifically known as Hymenoptera, is formed mainly by 3 groups or types of insects such as ants, bees and wasps, all of them share many similarities among them, that is why they are assigned to the same order. The curious thing about this type of arthropods is that a large number of them have wings to take flight, even ants will have such structures to fly for some time; however, these wings are only assigned to future queens and males in the case of specimens belonging to the family Formicidae (ants).

On the other hand, bees and wasps are more adapted to fly, this aspect being essential for them to survive in different terrestrial habitats, since they need to make long journeys periodically to find food or materials to make their shelters, in addition, finding a mate in the mating season is one of the most important aspects regarding the usefulness of wings in these insects, on the latter depends the consolidation of the populations of each species. Likewise, both bees and wasps are essential pollinating agents, so they carry on their bodies a heavy work on which the existence of life on this planet will depend. It is also worth mentioning that they are invertebrates that are very sensitive to changes caused by anthropogenic action, so their scarce presence in some areas may be an indication of serious environmental problems.

Automeris cf. jucunda (3).png

The wasps at morphological level have some basic differences when compared to bees, the main one is that their bodies are more slender and have less pubescence, even in wasps the presence of corbiculae and scopae in the legs is absent, due to this the task of pollination is much more efficient in bees, since these structures allow them to store pollen; However, despite being less specialized in the task of pollination, those wasps that visit flowers in search of nectar or any other organic material are still of great importance to plants.

In addition to nectar, other groups of so-called wasps are often specialized hunters of certain arthropods and others are generalists, meaning that they can feed on a variety of prey. This aspect makes these insects very good biological controllers that contribute significantly to maintaining the balance of ecosystems.

Automeris cf. jucunda (2).png

The common name "wasp" that we assign to these insects is usually very generalist, as it can encompass many hymenopterans that share a similar morphology; however, this term should be more attributed to members of the family Vespidae which houses more than 5,000 species, thus, being a numerous taxon and differing from ants or bees, the name "wasp" fits perfectly or in priority to specimens of the taxon known scientifically as Vespidae. However, from my perspective it will never be a serious mistake to consider a particular hymenopteran different from a bee under the term wasp, since this is only a nickname to refer to a specimen of which taxonomic aspects are unknown and of which only a morphological closeness to bees and ants is seen.

This family called Vespidae is one of the most popular of the order Hymenoptera, even a large portion of their populations are cosmopolitan, with this refers to the fact that the same species can be found in different countries or continents, something that speaks very well about the adaptability that these specimens have had when spreading around the world; in turn, this taxon is divided into 6 subfamilies, these being the: Vespinae, Stenogastrinae, Masarinae, Eumeninae, Euparagiinae and the Polistinae. Within the latter is located a genus known as Protopolybia, this is less distributed and is limited only to the regions comprising the neotropics.

Automeris cf. jucunda (4).png

On the other hand, something that makes Hymenoptera stand out are the behaviors they have developed during their evolutionary transitions, the most striking being the ability to form colonies where hundreds of these insects of the same species coexist sharing the work. For this reason, a percentage of ants, bees and wasps are considered as eusocial living beings, although there are also specimens of solitary life among these insects, especially at the level of wasps. Those belonging to the genus Protopolybia, fall into the group of social species, since they manage to elaborate small hives composed of a good number of individuals; also, the shapes they give to their hives is very variable and may depend to some extent on the species, which may possibly become a factor to be taken into account to identify them.

In the images you can see a hive of this type of wasps, these structures are relatively small and can build them on different surfaces, being very frequent to visualize on the leaves of plants. Similarly, when the elaboration of the hives begins, the queen wasp forms the hexagonal cells where she will place a small number of eggs, from these the first workers will be born and will expand the cells so that they can be occupied by more larvae, reason why it is very common to find a part of these cells exposed to the open air, since it is a relatively new expansion that will be covered when it is decided to use it.

Automeris cf. jucunda (5).png

The workers of Protopolybia wasps can perform different functions for the hive, this aspect is also fundamental in the colonies of other Hymenoptera, where these insects share the work forming castes or hierarchies. In Protopolybia, the most experienced members are the ones who leave the hive to look for food or materials to make and repair the hives, while the younger ones will be in charge of the constructions. Likewise, the defense and surveillance of the hive if performed by each of these wasps maintaining a constant state of alert, so when something approaches, a large number of these insects leave the hive to the surface and begin to make circling movements or use short flights back and forth to try to scare off the threat.

The defense mechanism of these hymenopterans has been a fundamental part of the success they maintain in ecosystems, in this way, all members of the infraorder known as Aculeata have the particularity that the ovipositor apparatus of the workers has become a kind of sting, in this group are included all wasps of the family Vespidae, also some bees and ants. However, both wasps and ants have a point in their favor that lies in the shape and composition of their stingers, which allows the same individual to sting several times in a matter of seconds without exposing its life; in bees this is somewhat different, since the shape of its stinger makes it very likely to get stuck in the victim and when trying to extract the stinger it gets stuck and the bee ends up detaching it along with its digestive apparatus, so it dies shortly after.

Automeris cf. jucunda (7).png

This type of wasps are not usually aggressive, but an attack can be generated at any time if the integrity of these is compromised, thus, when a wasp stings a particular aggressor pheromones are released that alert the rest of the colony, this causes them all to attack and the victim may end up with hundreds of stings that would complicate their existence. This defense mechanism is so feared that many insects that do not belong to the order Hymenoptera have managed to imitate the morphology of a bee, ant or wasp, an aspect known as Batesian mimicry. Generally, it is more likely to be attacked by wasps than by bees, this is because the former have the advantage that they can use any surface to create a honeycomb or hive, which is why within our modified spaces it is common to find wasps, while bees are more common in natural areas or areas with less human presence.

These insects of the genus Protopolybia are relatively small and are less than 10 millimeters long. The most outstanding aspect of their morphology is their coloration, which is predominantly black and yellow, reminiscent of the shades of some felines. Their eyes are large and compound, located on each side of the head, while the 3 simple eyes they have are located in the middle part of the first segment of their bodies (head). In turn, dividing the thorax and abdomen is a thin segment that resembles a waist which is known as petiole, this is not really an extra segment, but the last areas of the thoracic region are narrowed and acquire that shape, born from this point that phrase used of "wasp waist"; Likewise, the petiole is often used for species identification because it can present variations in any of these insects, therefore, it is always advisable to analyze this structure under a microscope or other magnifying lens.

Automeris cf. jucunda (6).png

The species of this genus are usually confused with others, especially with those of the genus Polybia; however, the patterns formed by the yellow color in the prosoma and abdomen help to differentiate them. However, differentiating the species that make up the genus Protopolybia is much more complicated, since almost all of them are present in the same countries, their combs are similar and most morphological aspects are also similar, including color. Currently, this genus is made up of about 35 species, although in reality most are considered subspecies of 5 species of this genus, which makes exact identification a bit more complicated. Regarding the species you have seen in the photographs, this could be a colony of Protopolybia exigua or some subspecies of this group, although more specific observations of their morphologies and behaviors would be necessary to make further comparisons that contribute to find exactly the species, it is somewhat complex in this case, taking into account that new species have been discovered.

The so-called wasps are essential insects to maintain a good performance of natural systems, it could be said that they are an intermediate part between ants and bees as far as ecology is concerned, this mostly due to the fact that they help balance the populations of other arthropods while they can also give their contribution in the pollination of plant species, to a lesser extent than bees, but with the same importance. At the same time, they are not aggressive insects as it is believed, they are living beings that will give the best of each one of them to protect their home and their future generations, just as we also do with our fellows, the union that they have strengthened over millions of years has been part of the success of their species on this planet, I have always mentioned, the human being as an organism of social behavior has much to learn from the Hymenoptera.
