Red Brick Piers Dissapearing 📷 A Picture A Day

During my last visit to Laarwijk and with it Domburg, I was proud to see the latest developments at the harbor and to observe that they aren't being stagnant, by introducing "newer" infrastructure (at the pier for example) and by sprucing up the meeting place. I only had one concern though and that was that the beauty and historic value of the old colonial pier is getting lost. Both by being taken over by nature (water) and by not being maintained.

I get that because of safety reasons, a newer and sturdier boarding port had to be built, but what a waste of the beautiful red brick engineering. I'm not an engineer and yet I can appreciate the craftsmanship of ports like these. I remember from all those times I've been stepping on or off of that pier, that there were more of those red bricks and less of the cement concrete. I'm also aware that there probably aren't craftsmen left in Suriname, who can built or maintain these structures.

Another valid argument is the cost of maintaining it and whether it'll be lucrative. What is the return on investment if the city council decided to put money into it? I haven't done the calculations, but my guess would be little to nothing. Call me nostalgic, but I still reminisce of times that have gone by and people who used to have gone up and down those steps before me.

Which is why I've decided to post this picture, so that some remnant of this old pier can be remembered. Are there any old piers from times gone by, left in your part of the world? Let me know in the comments below 🤓.
