Data in the Beautiful Game

Real-time metrics, statistics, and analytics are now essential to track performance in games. Even the ball has its own sensors, and this means it has to be charged before the game. With the advent of AI, I can only imagine what kind of crazy performance insights they come up with. Fascinating world we live in.

I took this image at Science World in Vancouver, Canada.

The fact that even the ball itself now has embedded sensors shows how far performance tracking has come. It’s not just about player stats anymore. 😑It’s about micro-level insights that can change how the game is played, coached, and even experienced by fans.

You're absolutely right. There is also a new mini-camera mounted on the ref's head to track gameplay. I love statistical analysis on human performance, particularly in the context of sports psychology, but this level of micro analysis could also have unintended consequences on the game, and the experience, as you rightly indicated. Hopefully, it'll be for the best.
