The importance of engineering in the care of the environment not only falls on environmental engineers, each and every one of the branches of engineering are available in this XXI century to address the issues of sustainability and balance, where the care and protection of natural areas, as well as renewable and non-renewable natural resources. A clear example of this change in the scientific and technological thinking of engineering is given in the construction and urban planning that is done today. For centuries, the construction of housing has had a significant impact on the balance of the eco-system, even becoming a threat to the construction of new urbanism in any part of the world.

Nowadays, engineers must take into account the value of caring for and protecting the environment, not only in urban planning, but also in the materials used for housing construction. It can be said frankly that for decades the issue of housing construction was considered an eminently economic issue, where the most important thing was the profits that the location and construction of housing developments could generate without thinking about the damage caused to the environment. An example of this was the indiscriminate felling of large wooded areas and hectares of fertile land used to build housing developments and shopping centers, even diverting riverbeds and drying up lakes. We are suffering the consequences of all this today.

That is why engineering has been dedicated to reverse the damage and abuses that were caused to the planet, and although the awareness comes much later, I believe that it is of utmost importance the efforts made from all engineering to change the damage caused to our planet. Today we understand engineering as a branch of knowledge that points towards life from sustainability and the enhancement of the natural, where the ecological being is put above economic gains. Today we even think of a new way of assuming engineering not only from science and technology but also from ecology.

As for the changes that have been outlined from engineering, for example, we have the use of drones for the discovery of deposits and sources of mineral resources, these generate less impact when using infrared photography, replacing explosions, logging and excavations to discover the deposits. Another point in favor of engineering is the use of waste materials in new urban constructions, processes for filtering and purifying water from rivers and springs, space photography and monitoring climate change is another contribution of engineering to improve the quality of life, these are just a few of the achievements that demonstrate the importance of engineering in the care of the environment and the maintenance of life on the planet.

La importancia de la ingeniería en el cuidado del medio ambiente no solo recae en los ingenieros ambientales, todas y cada una de las ramas de la ingeniería se disponen en este siglo XXI para la atención de los temas de sostenibilidad y equilibrio, donde el cuidado y resguardo de los espacios naturales, así como los recursos naturales renovables y no renovables. Un ejemplo claro de este cambio en el pensamiento científico y tecnológico de la ingeniería viene dado en las construcciones y planificación urbana que se hace en la actualidad. Durante siglos la construcción de viviendas afectaba notablemente el equilibrio del eco sistema, llegando a convertirse incluso en una amenaza la construcción de un nuevo urbanismo en cualquier parte del mundo.

En la actualidad se trata que los ingenieros tomen en cuenta el valor del cuidado y resguardo del medio ambiente, no sólo en la planificación de los urbanismos, sino en los materiales que se usan para la construcción de las viviendas. Puede decirse con toda franqueza que durante décadas el tema de la construcción de viviendas se consideraba un tema eminentemente económico, donde lo más importante eran las ganancias que la ubicación y construcción de los urbanismos podían generar sin pensar en los daños que se ocasionaban al medio ambiente. Muestra de ello, era la tala indiscriminada de grandes zonas boscosas y hectáreas de campo fértil usado para construir urbanizaciones y centros comerciales, llegando incluso a desviar cauces de ríos y secar lagos. De todo eso estamos hoy padeciendo las consecuencias.

Es por ello, que la ingeniería se ha dedicado a revertir los daños y abusos que se ocasionaron al planeta, y si bien la toma de consciencia llega mucho tiempo después, considero que es de suma importancia los esfuerzos que se hacen desde todas las ingenierías por cambiar el daño ocasionado a nuestro planeta. Hoy entendemos, a la ingeniería como una rama del saber que apunta hacia la vida desde la sostenibilidad y el realce de lo natural, donde el ser ecológico se pone por encima de las ganancias económicas. Hoy incluso se piensa en una nueva forma de asumir la ingeniería no solo desde la ciencia y la tecnología sino también desde la ecología.

En cuanto a los cambios que se han trazado desde la ingeniería, por ejemplo, se tiene el uso de los drones para el descubrimiento de los yacimientos y fuentes de recursos minerales, estos generan un menor impacto al usarse la fotografía con infrarrojo, sustituyendo las explosiones, tala y excavaciones para descubrir los yacimientos. Otro punto a favor de la ingeniería, es el uso de materiales de desecho en las nuevas construcciones de los urbanismos, los procesos para el filtrado y purificación del agua de ríos y manantiales, la fotografía espacial y el seguimiento a los cambios climáticos es otro aporte de la ingeniería a las mejoras de la calidad de vida, estos son apenas unos cuantos de los logros que manifiestan la importancia de la ingeniería en el cuidado del medio ambiente y el mantenimiento de la vida en el planeta.

The importance of engineering in the care of the environment is undoubtedly something that should be reinforced and highlighted. For a long time the economic interest in engineering was above the care of the planet and today that has changed.
