Spanish version at the end

Hello Hive friends. I will tell you straight up that for this ecoTrain question QOTW #9.4: Can Spirituality and Technology Live Together?, I have a resounding answer, and it is definitely YES.

I do believe that technology and spirituality can live together and I will explain the reason for my answer.

⚙️ What technology is for me

image.png

I actually believe, indeed, I am convinced that technology has contributed to people's spiritual growth. In the first question of this round, we talked about what spirituality is. A very important topic and one that really got us all thinking.

Spirituality is a human need and since the beginning of mankind, man has tried to satisfy it. That belief in a superior being, the desire to know him and to worship him has accompanied us throughout history. Even in primitive man.

In those times what man knew of God and the ways in which he sought to worship him were passed down from generation to generation through oral tradition and by example. However, with the discovery or implementation of written methods of communication, this wealth of knowledge could be physically recorded, preserved, faithfully reproduced through copies and transported or sent to different destinations.

The emergence of writing allowed the knowledge of the divine to be made known and to reach distant parts of the world. So the invention of the written code, of paper, of the means of transport, became from that time onwards allies of spirituality. Because they contributed to expand and make known the knowledge already acquired.

Up to this point, I was not totally convinced that writing could be considered as technology per se, but the methods of paper production and the means of transportation could. However I have stumbled upon an incredible surprise. Using our friend Google (as part of those technological tools) I found some wonderful information. The quote which I will copy verbatim below is from Alvarado et al. (1999), it reads:

"The sociologist Raymond Williams considers writing as a means of cultural production that uses resources, materials, and tools external to the human body. He calls the means of production that make use of external resources "technologies. That is to say, writing is a technology. All communication technologies require learning on the part of the user in order to introduce messages; but only writing needs, in addition, learning in order to be able to receive them. In other words, both the production and reception of written messages require long and costly training, which puts writing at a disadvantage with respect to other communication technologies, such as audiovisuals. No one needs to learn to "watch" television; on the other hand, there is an institution, the elementary school, dedicated fundamentally to the teaching of reading and writing ".

⚙️ The contribution of technology to spirituality

In turn, technology has allowed the reproduction of the sacred writings, not only in their original languages, some of which are no longer spoken, but their translation into a multitude of languages, especially modern ones. This has allowed them to be available to the whole of humanity in general terms. I don't know if you remember the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg. According to what I studied in high school the first thing he printed was the Bible and he was able to reproduce several copies of it.

Nowadays the bible is the best selling book and with the largest print run around the world. Not only can almost anyone around the world read it in their own language, even in indigenous languages, but they can also read or listen to it online, or through downloads to your own electronic device.

But not only has technology benefited the Bible and therefore the Christian faith. It also covers any other sacred or religious book. On the other hand, the media has allowed the dissemination of spiritual information that has reached millions of homes and individuals around the world, such as through radio, television or newspapers.

⚙️ Benefits of technology during the pandemic

Today, even during the pandemic we have had tools such as zoom, which has allowed us to benefit from religious instruction through videoconferencing. For example, in my case, Christian instruction, which although not live, is live. Even the phone and smart devices have also become tools through which we can research, download, share or produce spiritual content information from which we can not only benefit individually but also spread and contribute to the spirituality of others.

Perhaps someone may disagree with my opinion and that is fine. Because we all have the right to have different opinions and this kind of initiative encourages us to express ourselves. And it is very true that technology has been responsible for terrible things around the world, but let's remember that the name was the one who designed technology and this was only possible because it was made in the image and likeness of God whose main qualities are love, justice, wisdom and power.

So technology is a consequence of the manifestation, albeit to an imperfect degree, of that wisdom and power. But man's desire to be above others, to rule them, to control and subdue them, as well as pride, selfishness and greed have caused man to misuse technology in many cases, even against his fellow man.

Well, with these lines I justify my answer to this interesting question. My greetings and best wishes to all.
