APPROACH TO THE CONCEPT OF SUSTAINABILITY: BEYOND ECONOMIC CAPITAL

Sustainability emerges as a necessity from the environmental crisis that was globally recognized from the seventies onwards, as a consequence of the continuous and growing negative impact on the biosphere produced by the action of man and the archaic and rentier thinking oriented to an economy based on consumption.

As a consequence, the unrestrained exploitation of natural resources and the worrying pollution produced since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. These reasons, in part, encouraged emerging civil associations and world leaders to take a greater interest in socio-environmental issues, as well as the need to reform the concept around the term "Development".

In this sense, the idea of going deeper into this topic in the @ecotrain community, lies in the need to remind societies that what is indispensable is to have a harmonious relationship with our environment, that it is necessary to leave aside pettiness and start living together in balance, where economic interests should not prevail over the priorities of the planet.

So it is appropriate to recall and take up the postulates proposed by the author Gudynas (2011), in his work entitled "Educational Contours of Sustainability".

The author starts from the premise that:

"Sustainable Development is a label under which there are different conceptualizations that attend to different dimensions for which it is necessary to adjust the development options within planetary limits, either by the available natural resources or by the ecosystemic capacities to face pollution".

Therefore, we must establish priorities and focus on the type of Sustainable Development that we seek as a community, hence the need to consider positions that allow the development of criticisms, aimed at the suitability of the much desired Sustainable Development that many of us profess.

It is on this basis that we must decide:

1. Accept the environmental crisis that surrounds the planet and seek solutions from the economic so that we can continue to advance in the growth of society.

Image 3. Disrespect for our planet's natural resources causes damage to its regulatory systems. We must take care of the planet's carrying capacity if we want to move towards sustainability. Author: Ria Sopala in Pixabay.

2. Accept that nature is the main raw material in economic aspects, but its use must be framed in respect for the load capacity and self-regeneration of the same.

3. To assume that the ecological component must prevail over the economic and social interests that a country may have, whose development must be framed in policies that do not harm the environment.

Image 4. We must respect the biodiversity of our planet, it is the guarantee that will allow us to leave a legacy to future generations.. Author: Andy Bay en Pixabay.

Given the above, it is necessary that each individual is educated in values, awareness, behavior and attitudes that allow them to act collectively or individually in favor of respect for nature, biodiversity and balance.

We must remember that to continue overloading our planet, without respecting its self-regenerative capacity, implies collateral damage to our survival on it.
