My Experiences and Opinion after dipping my Toes into AI Art for the very fist time [EN/DE]

Anyone with a bit of an interest in art and technology will probably have come across the term "AI Art" at some point in the past few weeks. That's what happened to me as well, but I didn't pay attention to the topic first. Only when I suddenly noticed an unusually large number of digital artworks by previously unknown people in various Facebook groups for photography, I began to take an interest in this trend and very quickly came across the AI software "Midjourney". Two days later I present you my first digital artwork that I created in cooperation with an artificial intelligence. So can every photographer suddenly be a digital artist now? Or is that just cheating? You can read about my opinion and my first experiences with AI Art in this article.

Jeder, der sich ein bisschen für Kunst und Technologie interessiert, wird wohl in den vergangenen Wochen irgendwann einmal über den Begriff "AI Art" gestolpert sein. So erging es auch mir, doch schenkte ich dem Thema zuerst keine Beachtung. Erst als mir plötzlich ungewöhnlich viele digitale Kunstwerke von mir bislang unbekannten Personen in diversen Facebook-Gruppen für Fotografie auffielen, begann ich mich für diesen Trend zu interessieren und stieß sehr schnell auf die AI-Software "Midjourney". Zwei Tage später präsentiere ich euch nun mein erstes digitales Kunstwerk, das ich quasi in Kooperation mit einer künstlichen Intelligenz erstellt habe. Kann also jeder Fotograf jetzt plötzlich ein digitaler Künstler sein? Oder ist das einfach nur Schummlerei? Meine Meinung und meine ersten Erfahrungen mit AI Art lest ihr in diesem Artikel.

My first path led me to YouTube. Here I watched various tutorials on Midjourney and was simply speechless when I looked at the incredibly beautiful results of the software. I could hardly sleep the following night, because I was so excited to try it myself. Even my very first result I found really good. It was a post apocalyptic zombie cat in a suit of armor. You can see it above. A futuristic girl with cat ears that I created next, you can see below.

Mein erster Weg führte mich zu YouTube. Hier sah ich mir diverse Tutorials zu Midjourney an und war einfach nur sprachlos, als ich mir die unfassbar schönen Ergebnisse der Software ansah. Ich konnte in der darauffolgenden Nacht kaum schlafen, zu groß war die Vorfreude darauf, es selbst zu versuchen. Schon mein allererstes Ergebnis fand ich wirklich gut. Es handelte sich um eine postapokalyptische Zombie-Katze in einer Rüstung. Ihr seht das Bild oberhalb dieses Absatzes. Mein zweites Ergebnis, ein futuristisches Mädchen mit Katzenohren seht ihr unterhalb.

A few attempts later I got the result I liked best. I told the software to create a futuristic android zombie woman with red glowing eyes and black hair and entered some additional parameters I had learned in the meantime. I got four different suggestions from Midjourney. However, the result I liked the most did not match the cover image of this post, but first looked like this:

Einige Versuche später erhielt ich das Ergebnis, das mir am besten gefiel. Ich befahl der Software eine futuristische Android-Zombie-Frau mit rot glühenden Augen und schwarzen Haaren zu erstellen und gab noch einige zusätzliche Parameter ein, die ich inzwischen gelernt hatte. Ich erhielt vier verschiedene Vorschläge von Midjourney. Das Ergebnis, das mir am besten gefiel, entsprach aber nicht dem Titelbild dieses Beitrags, sondern sah zuerst so aus:

It took a lot more work in other programs to get my finished work of art. But can I really call this one "mine"? Well, I would say it is "ours" and by us I mean the AI and me. The idea for the work came undoubtedly from me. Midjourney gave me its suggestions for a realization of this idea. Then I picked one of the suggestions and worked on it until I was satisfied with the result. Teamwork with an artificial intelligence in 2022? I must have arrived in the future.

Es waren noch sehr viele weitere Arbeitsschritte in anderen Programmen nötig, um mein fertiges Kunstwerk zu erhalten. Doch kann ich dieses denn nun wirklich als "meines" bezeichnen? Nun, ich würde sagen, es ist "unseres" und mit uns meine ich die KI und mich. Die Idee für das Werk kam zweifellos von mir. Midjourney erstellte mir daraufhin seine Vorschläge einer Umsetzung für diese Idee. Ich wiederum suchte mir eine davon heraus und bearbeitete sie weiter, bis ich mit dem Ergebnis zufrieden war. Teamwork mit einer künstlichen Intelligenz in 2022? Ich bin wohl in der Zukunft angekommen.

Above you can see another example, which I liked so much that I only made some minor adjustments (left: before, right: after editing). My idea behind it was a post-apocalyptic city view of Graz. But what is my opinion about AI Art after all? I have to say, I can understand people who find it unfair that you can now create unique artwork so easily. Is this still art at all? Well, the exact same discussion took place at the beginning of photography. People said it wasn't art anymore if you just had to press a button on a camera. But the idea for a photo originates in the photographer's mind, not in the camera. In the same way, you have to feed software like Midjourney with the right information, which also comes from your own imagination. You also have to get familiar with the various commands in order to have the maximum possible influence on the results. It is already noticeable that there are people who get better results than others. Furthermore, you can of course edit these results further with other tools according to your own ideas. So I think that you can use AI software as an artist without being ashamed of it. In any case, I'm fascinated by the creative possibilities it offers me and I'm curious to see what inspiration I can draw from it in the future.

Oberhalb seht ihr noch ein weiteres Beispiel, das mir so gut gefiel, dass ich nur etwas an den Farben und Grundeinstellungen schraubte (links vor, rechts nach der Bearbeitung). Meine Idee dahinter war eine postapokalyptische Stadtansicht von Graz. Was ist nun aber meine Meinung zu AI Art? Ich muss sagen, ich kann Leute verstehen, die es unfair finden, dass man nun so einfach einzigartige Kunstwerke erstellen kann. Ist das denn überhaupt noch Kunst? Nun, die genau gleiche Diskussion gab es am Beginn der Fotografie. Leute meinten, es sei doch keine Kunst mehr, wenn man einfach nur den Knopf einer Kamera drücken muss. Doch die Idee für ein Foto entsteht im Kopf des Fotografen, nicht in der Kamera. Genauso muss man Software wie Midjourney mit den richtigen Informationen füttern, die eben auch der eigenen Fantasie entspringen. Auch muss man sich mit den verschiedenen Befehlen auseinandersetzten, um einen möglichst großen Einfluss auf die Ergebnisse zu haben. So zeigt es sich bereits jetzt, dass es Personen gibt, die bessere Resultate erhalten als andere. Weiters kann man diese Ergebnisse dann natürlich auch nach seinen eigenen Vorstellungen mit anderen Tools weiter bearbeiten. Ich denke also, dass man als Künstler durchaus KI-Software verwenden kann, ohne sich dafür schämen zu müssen. Ich bin jedenfalls von den kreativen Möglichkeiten, die sie mir bietet, fasziniert und gespannt, welche Inspirationen ich in Zukunft daraus ziehen kann.
