OBJECTIVES
At the end of this lesson, students should be able to;

  • Explain the term “Posture”
  • Describe the characteristics and the importance of good posture
  • Distinguish between good and bad posture
  • State the guidelines for the maintenance of good posture

INTRODUCTION
The body framework is designed to be held in a particular position while carrying out various activities. These particular positions are necessary to facilitate one’s personality, health and appearance.

MEANING OF POSTURE
Posture is the way or manner one carries the body when walking, sitting, standing, and working. Posture is good when the body is held correctly and bad when the body is carried wrongly.

TYPES OF POSTURE

  • Standing posture
  • Sitting posture
  • Walking posture
  • Working posture

CHARACTERISTICS OF GOOD POSTURE
Good posture is characterized by the following;

  1. The body will be smart
  2. The shoulders will be squared
  3. The tummy will be well tucked in
  4. And body figures will be maintained

IMPORTANCE OF GOOD POSTURE

  1. Good posture helps to enhance our appearance and personality.
  2. It helps good body movement because the right muscles are used
  3. Good posture helps prevent problems in the body which may lead to poor health condition.
  4. It prevents damage to body figure like bent figure.
  5. It gives self-confidence, dignity and respect

GUIDELINES FOR MAINTAINING GOOD POSTURE
(a) Good Sitting Posture
To adopt a good sitting posture, the following rules must be followed:

  1. Sit with your hip on the chair and not with your back or elbow as your support
  2. Support the back with the chair. Do not lean forward (i.e don’t slouch)
  3. Keep your legs together or one slightly in front of the other.
  4. Keep the head erect and chest up
  5. Always sit straight with your feet relaxed and your hands placed on your thighs
  6. Hold the shoulder back to the chair
  7. Always make sure to sit on a comfortable chair.

(b) Good Standing Posture
The following guidelines should be adhered to:

  1. Always stand firm on both feet so that both can carry your weight
  2. Stand with your head up and chest out
  3. Straighten your arms to swing freely from your shoulders
  4. Tuck in your bottom and tummy (or abdomen)
  5. Wear comfortable footwear
  6. Wear clothes that allow free body movement

(c) Good Walking Posture
To maintain a good walking posture, these guidelines are important and should be followed:

  1. Lift the feet up smartly. Do not drag your feet while walking
  2. Walk without twisting or bending the body
  3. Hold the head up while the arms swings naturally at the sides
  4. Tuck in the bottom and abdomen
  5. Do not wear ill-lifting shoes. They make walking uncomfortable.

(d) Good Working Posture
Many works require good posture to make such works easy to accomplish and to do such works thoroughly without getting tired easily. Example of such works are reading, writing, ironing, scrubbing etc.
1. Good Reading Posture
The following guidelines should be followed:

  • Sit by a table of appropriate height
  • Support the back on a chair
  • The feet must also reach the floor to avoid muscle cramps and contractions
  • Do not bend too low over or towards the book when reading

2. Good Ironing Posture
The following guidelines should be adopted:

  • Use an ironing board adjusted to waist level while ironing
  • Do not stoop or stretch to work
  • Place one leg a little forward while ironing
  • Never iron on the floor, if you don’t have an ironing board use a table

3. Good Scrubbing Posture
The following guidelines should be followed:

  • Kneel, placing the backbone parallel to the floor
  • Do not curve the backbone
  • Scrub with one; use the other hand to support the body on the floor while scrubbing

ACTIVITY
Practice good sitting, standing, walking and working postures.
