OBJECTIVES

At the end of this lesson, the students should be able to;

  • Define Cleaning Agents
  • State the materials needed for making homemade cleaning agents
  • Methods and procedures in making cleaning agents.

What are cleaning agents?

Cleaning agents are materials that we can use to clean items in the home. There are several home-made cleaning agents, which can generally be grouped into:

  • Soaps
  • Scouring powder
  • Abrasives

In preparing cleaning agents, there certain materials needed. We can make home-made cleaning agents by addition of some materials together in the right quantity. Below are some materials:

Materials Needed

Domestic Wastes: Theses are materials we do not intend to use again at home eg egg shells, snail shells, broken China plate or mug and wood ash.

Natural Materials: These are materials we can find in nature e.g fine sand (from erosion path after a heavy rainfall or from river bank) and common salt.

Plant materials are also used as natural cleaning agents. These include sand paper leaf (eepin), pawpaw leaves, fruits such as lime, lemon, pineapple etc.

Chemicals: These are substances that can also be used as cleaning agents e.g detergent.

How to make the cleaning agents

  1. Egg shells
    Procedure
    a) Collect broken egg shells
    b) Sun dry to remove water
    c) Crush the egg shells to pieces
    d) Grind the shells until it becomes powder
    e) Add detergent to it
    This is egg shell powder and it can be used for cleaning

  1. Wood ash
    Procedure
    a) Collect ashes from a firewood or charcoal fireplace
    b) Sift it through a sieve to remove all crumbs and unburnt wood
    c) Add detergent to it
    It is ready for use as wood ash powder

  1. Fine sand
    Procedure
    a) Collect some fine sand from erosion path of river bank
    b) Sieve it to remove bigger stones
    c) Add detergent to it
    ***This could be used as fine sand powder for cleaning

  1. Snail shells
    Procedure
    a) Collect snail shells
    b) Roast the shell in the fire
    c) Collect the resulting white ash
    d) Grind the white ash
    e) Add detergent to it
    This is snail shell powder and it is used for cleaning

  1. Fruits
    The juice from fruits such as lime, lemon and pineapple can be used to clean metallic objects effectively e.g trophies, ornament and decorations within the home.
