Importance of teaching practice to teaching profession

Education they say is the bedrock for development of a Nation, as no Nation can be developed beyond the level of education of it's citizenry as such teachers at all levels of education be it primary, secondary or tetiarry been a major stakeholder in education has a great role to play especially those at tetiarry level. The university education is structured in such a way that students have areas of specialization,that is the reason for having different faculties in university system, unlike primary education system where all students have to learn some basics. For example,Faculty of education is designed for students who aspire to become teachers,while faculty of medical sciences is for those who aspire to be doctors or other allies medical profession and so on.

But at all level of education, not every thing can be learnt at the four corners of the classrooms,that is why at various faculties or departments there is a special program designed for students to learn more about their profession outside classrooms so as to further expose them to the core of their professions. Examples of such programme is teaching practice.Teaching practice is a program designed by the federal government of Nigeria to expose the students in the colleges and faculties of education to the teaching profession so as to train them to become qualified teachers.

Teaching practice comes up twice before students graduate from
their institutions,be it colleges of education or university but time and Duration of the program varries. For students in university,the teaching practice starts at 200 and 300 level with minimum of six weeks, while colleges of education have their teaching practice at 200 and 300 levels for three months.

The whole essence of teaching practice is to avail these students the opportunity to be exposed to the core of teaching in normal classrooms and to practicalize what has been taught in their various institutions.

Another importance of teaching practice is that it improves the efficiency and effectiveness of the teaching profession as quality and qualified teachers will emerge through the process,also the scheme will help the students evolve to develope a good student-teacher relationship and as well boost their level of confidence.
