Behavioural Objectives:-

At the end of the lesson the lesson the students should be able to:-
1. Define farm produce preservation; and
2. List at least four(4) benefits of preserving farm produce.

Previous knowledge:-

The students were taught the introductory part of this lesson from the meaning of farm produce processing, down to different methods of producing farm produce etc.

Instructional Material(s):-

A pocket chart showing some of the benefits of preserving farm produce.

Introduction:

Have you ever wondered why your potato chips, flour, pickles, and tomato sauce can be stored in the house for days, weeks or months before we eat or use them and they do not get spoilt? Let's find out as we learn more on this.

Presentation:-

Step 1:- Meaning of farm produce preservation.

Farm produce preservation is the process of treating and keeping farm produce in a way that greatly shows down or stops spoilage. Preservation of farm produce is usually done when the farm produce are in season and abundant to make them available when they are out of season and expensive.

Step 2:- Benefits of preserving farm produce.

Farm produce are usually preserved for the following reasons:-

1. Preservation saves money. People buy farm produce at a cheaper rate when they are in season and preserve them for use when they are out of season and expensive.

2. Preserving farm produce ensures that they are always available for future use even after their seasons.

3. Preserving farm produce makes them available in areas where they are not produced.

4. Preservation helps to retain the color, taste and nutritional value of farm produce.

5. It prevents possible contamination and infection from unpreserved food items.

6. It helps to keep farm produce for a long period of time without spoilage and wastage.

7. It helps to protect farm produce from insects and other pests attack.

8. Preservation makes the transportation and storage of farm produce easier since it requires less space. For example, if you dry green leafy vegetables, their weight and volume will reduce thus, making their storage easy.

9. Preservation helps to make farm produce remain good and viable for planting in the next season.

Evaluation:-

The teacher ask the students questions to ascertain the level of their understanding:-

1. Define farm produce preservation; and
2. List at least four(4) benefits of preserving farm produce.

Homework:-

1. List at least four(4) methods of farm produce preservation.
2. Cut and paste the methods mentioned above.
