Subject:- Agricultural Science

Class:- Primary 4

Topic:- Processes involved in Making Compost.

Duration:- 35 minutes

Date:- 13th May 2020

Behavioural Objectives:-

At the end of the lesson the lesson the students should be able to:-
1. List the two methods of making compost; and
2. List the steps involved in each methods of making compost.

Previous knowledge:-

Some of the students has parents that are farmers and so the must have seen them making compost.

Instructional Material(s):-

Flip chat showing the different methods of making compost.

Introduction:

Presentation:-

Step 1:- Methods of Making compost.

There are two methods of making compost which are:-
1. Pit Method; and
2. Heap method

Step 2:- Process involved in Making compost.

First you must know that the process of making compost is called composting.
The first step in making compost is to select a well drained level ground with a partial shade, close to the Source of compost materials and where the compost is to be used.
Once you have chosen a location, you can then follow the steps in any of the methods listed below.

(a). Pit Method:-

1. Dig four(4) pits (A, B, C, and D) of equal sizes- 1m x 1m x 0.5m.

2. Empty the compost materials into pit A by arranging them in layers and separating the layers with soil. Wet the compost materials in the pit with water to aid easy decomposition. This pit is known as the Loading pit.

3. After two(2) weeks, move the contents in pit A into pit B. This is called first turn.

4. After another two weeks, move the contents in pit B into pit C. This is second turn.

5. Finally, move the contents in pit C into pit D. This is the third turn.

6. The contents in pit D is referred to as compost/manure after 6-8 weeks. Cover the compost to prevent evaporation before it is applied to the soil. Moving the compost materials from one pit to another allows proper decay and decomposition.

Heap Method:-

This is prepared by placing the compost materials in a heap buried with soil and moistened with water.

Activity:
The teacher should help the students by dividing them into groups. Each groups will be guided by the teacher to gather compost materials and make compost using any of the above methods.

Evaluation:-

The teacher ask the students questions to ascertain the level of their understanding:-

1. List the two methods of making compost; and
2. List the steps involved in each methods of making compost.

Homework:-

1. Cut and paste a diagram of heap compost on your note book.
2. What is the difference between pit method of Making compost and heap method of making compost?
