Behavioural Objectives:-

At the end of the lesson the lesson the students should be able to:-
1. Define soil;
2. List the type of soil
3. List the characteristics of each type of soil; and
4. Write on how soil was formed.

Previous knowledge:-

The students have been playing with sand, or better still have been building with sand.

Step 1:- Definition of Soil.

Land is the solid part of the earth's surface. It is made of minerals salt they need from the soil.

Soil is the top layer of the earth surface on which plant grow. Plants are held to the soil by their roots. Plants take water and mineral salts they need from the soil. Animals like earthworms, rabbits and moles burrow and live in the soil.

Step 2:- Types of Soil

1. Sandy Soil:-

  • This type of soil has large, loosely packed particles.
  • Sandy soil does not hold water
  • Sandy soil is rough when it is rubbed between the fingers.
  • Sandy soil does not hold many nutrients
  • Crops do not grow well on sandy soil

2. Loamy Soil:-

  • Loamy soil is a mixture a of sand ams clay particles which are moderate in sizes.
  • It holds water moderately
  • It is the best soil for growing crops
  • Loamy soil is a fertile soil.
  • Loamy soil is a fertile soil
  • Loamy soil contains large amount of decayed animal and plant materials.

3. Clay Soil:-

  • This type of soil has small and packed particles
  • Clay is smooth when dry and sticky when wet
  • Clayey soil can hold a lot of through it.
  • Clayey soil holds water very well.
  • Most crops do not grow on it.

Step 3:- Soil Formation

Soil is formed from the breakdown of rocks into smaller particles. The breakdown of rock into soil particles is called weathering as is caused by:-
(a). Climate.
(b). The activities of plants and animals present in the soil.
(c). The reaction of various chemical materials present in the soil.
When the soil is formed, they may be taken to a far distance by running water and strong wind.
